| Surgery in 14 days! Excited & Nervous
Dear friends,
I have been researching wls for a little over a year now, have a wonderful surgeon that I feel very comfortable with, attended meetings for the last 10 months, read a dozen wls books and recently found this wonderful site.
I am 37 years old, married with one 5 year old son and a music teacher at a nearby middle school. My surgery (Roux n Y) is scheduled for my very first day of summer vacation (6/18/07). I think I am as ready for surgery as I can be. I have been working with a L.C.S.W. and a dietician from my surgeons' team too. I plan to continue both of those relationships as well as my monthly support meetings.
I have a great hubby, loving parents and wonderful friends. Although they all support my decission I don't feel like they get me right now or the emotions I am having. I am really excited to have this opportunity for change. I am confident that I can be compliant with all of the modifications to make the surgery successful.
I am a little nervous too about the actual surgery. How much pain will there be? What will the hospital stay be like? Will I be able to bend down and tie my sneakers myself (I can now) to take my walks in the hospital? How much am I going to need my husband to do for me? How independent will I be immediately after surgery? Will I spend most of the time sleeping?
I know everyone and each surgery has its own individualities. I wish I had a crystal ball to see what I am going to feel like in the days and weeks to come immediately after surgery.
Thanks to everyone that posts. I feel inspired and excited to join your ranks. You are all amazing to me!
Amy

| Hi Amy! Glad you found this site---I had my surgery 5 days ago and know exactly how you are feeling. That feeling of being half excited and half of you so nervous and anxious; don't worry as I found out from others here, it's totally normal. As far as the surgery and hopital stay, (of course, everyone has their own individual experience) I found that once I checked in and changed into the gown everything just went pretty fast. With pain meds that they give you there is little pain. As far as activity, I was not able to walk the hopital floor until the second night and that was with the nurse. My husband has taken the week off to help me--and that has been wonderful. My doctor said for the first two weeks alternate rest periods and short walks. Hope this helped a little! Good luck

just before my big day 2 years ago.
I am sure everything will be fine

Hi. Welcome. Congratulations on your decision.
In terms of pain everyone is different, but for me, I had little to none. I used one morphine drip the first day. I was given tylenol with codeine twice and that was it. I tolerate pain well from what I understand. In the hospital I was more stiff than in pain. Everyone's experience is different. I could not bend down and tie my own sneakers for a week or two. Everyone here can attest to the fact that while in the hospital you will get next to no sleep. Between them checking your vitals every hour and other visits, you will not sleep. at least not enough to aknowledge it lol. I think the worst part of being in the hospital for me was the no food and drink for two days. Nothing. Not even water. That was bad for me because I am a drinker. Before surgery, I could drink juices and soda all day long and not eat and be content lol! Now I just try to get in the minimums.
I think you will do fine. Honestly. the anticipation is the worst part. You will literally fall sleep and wake up just like that. Then before you know it you will be home.
Again, welcome to the boards. I am relatively new to this so if there's anything I can answer about the beginning post op stages, let me know.
