Margie honey ask your surgeon or PCP about this. They will more than likey send you to a pain management specialist. They are god sends. Let me explain this a bit. PCP drs used to precribe it. However they had so many people drug seeking and acutally couldnt keep up with it so the pain management drs get them now. Its not a federal mandate yet I dont think? But in reality it should be one.

I have arthritis really bad myself. THe celebrex was very good. I had to come off it before surgery. And never take it again. My pain med Drs put me on a patch. Its a Fentynal patch. I place in on once every 2 days. I started out one every three days. It goes though the skin and never the stomach and its a miracle. I do have times I need a tylenol for break through pain.... but Its tolerable. If not then I see my ortho Doc to get either fluid pulled off the joint..... or cortizone placed if not another type of med.

Your arthritis may get alot better since you have had this surgery. Mine are old injures to my joints so it got some better but not alot.

Good luck with this and trust me its worth the mention.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Thanks. I went and read the patches I have, they are called flector. The doc said they just came out about 6 months ago. They seem to help. I just put them on the place that hurts and its supposed to take the swelling out. Is that kind of what yours does?

No not mine but I do know what your talking about. Mine is a pain med that slowly goes though your skins like its absorbs water. The ones your talking about are really good from what I have been told. I worked for a ortho Dr who used one himself one weekend because of a old knee injury. He said he would write a RX for anyone that suffered with his pain like he did. I know we had alot of patients after giving them samples request more when they were done with the samples we handed out.

That could be a great idea. Keep me updated on them. I use to be a floater nursefor a large clinic so you will see me talk about working with different Docs from time to time.

Thanks. Great to know that we have someone with your kind of experience. Not only in weight loss but the medical world. I'll let you know how they work. It probably would be alot safer then the meds........

How about Nyquil? It's the only medicine that makes me feel better when I have a cold...

Check out the labels carefully. Anything with aspirin or NSAIDs in them are basically off limits.
Besides, how you react to medication can change post op.

On things like Nyquil, be sure to check the alcohol levels!! You are highly susceptible to intoxication, so don't take it when you might be embarrassed by lower inhibitions!!

I use it. Like Doc and CT said read the label. I know it has tylenol. Its always been a good med for me to use when having a cold etc. But yes double check that label first.

I don't make a habit of taking any pain killers, but I was told by my plastic surgeon that it was safe to take them for a limited time this far out. I fell down the stairs 3 days after Christmas and tore a muscle in my hip/back and went through 35 vicodin in a week--the er doc also prescribed Motrin--the pain was terrible and there was no way I could have functioned without both. The ER doc also confirmed that it was safe to take Motrin this far out...

just to be careful, I stopped all pain meds the moment I felt up to it...Vicodin addiction isn't something I want to mess with regardless of my pouch...

I am learning alot from this site and I thank you all. When I had my surgery 21 yrs. ago none of this advice was out there. I amthinking that I need to go to a Dr. who is familiar with Gastric Bypass because I haven"t seen anyone for this in 17 years and my regular docs don"t even have a clue or mention anything about the surgery. I didn't know about the meds to avoid at all.Thank you so much for this info and any other you may have that will help an old schooler.
