Default Food sticking

Ok. Today is my vent day. I am sooo tired of food sticking. Cannot eat meat yet. One day something is fine the next time it sticks. But mostly and kind of meat or fish. I had 3 itsy bitsy canned sardines for lunch all mashed up and even put a little mustard on them to mositened it up a bit. Yep they are stuck. Hurts. Can feel it trying to get into the pouch at the top. What can I do when it sticks? Sometimes I throw it up. But after hrs. of hurting. Only done that about 3 or 4 times but mostly suffer through it. Any suggestions? Even the papaya enzymes don't help a much. Mattie

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I would talk to your doc if you are chewing up the food fine enough. Also it may be fine enough but if you are trying to swallow too much at one time that will happen too. I would chew to death but swallow a lot. I had to learn how to put less in my mouth. I would get food stuck all the time but it is a learning process!

yeah you should call your dr. otherwise i would suggest a smaller bite, perhaps the baby spoon technique? also eventhough its mashed up is it possible its just not being chewed enough? im sorry you;re having a hard time. it will get better.

ps. do one bite chew chew then swallow. you can usually feel it stuck with the first bite. if you keep eating you are going to either puke or hurt yourself.

((HUG))
perhaps your opening is to narrow and has a stricture.
YOU should inform your surgeon and get scoped to see whats
going on.

1) Call your surgeon, there is the possibility of a stricture, but the cardia-- the opening between the esophagus and pouch -- is untouched, so strictures don't happen there, but you may have had acid reflux pre op without your realizing, and that sometimes causes trouble. Also, though it may feel as if food is stuck trying to get into the pouch, it may be that actually, you have a stricture where the pouch opens to the small intstines, and that may be what's giving you the stuck feeling.

2) Don't forget that your new pouch is smaller than you mouth--so, even if the food stuff doesn't fill your mouth, it may still be too large for your pouch.

I agree call the surgeon and run it by the. But yes I did have that happen too and i do think its becasue we are not use to chewing and eating so little and so slowly. Eggs alwasy did that to me. One day they would be fine and the next its that feelign of stuckness right in the throat/chest area. but I would still run it by your surgeon. Good luck.

Thanks everybody for your input. Last night I did eat about an ounce of broiled chicken and chewed and chewed. It went down fine. Also had a small portion of baked sweet potato. I did mention it to my Dr last week and he said just to give it time. I don't go back until September 24. So maybe I was taking too big of bites even though they were small to my way of thinking. It is weird when it does happen it even makes my breasts hurt. It is just awful. I would not mind if it NEVER happens again. Thanks Guys. Mattie

Your right Mattie, right there near those good old boobs. Its the worst feeling. I did it a few times and it hurt bad enough that I finally learned my lesson. It is defintely a change in our way of eating. Here we think we are taking smaller bites and chewing alot but some times we just need to do more. Its a very concious effort especially in the beginning phase like your in now. Hang in there. It does get better.
