Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I have been reading some of the materials on this site and I'm a little confused. I read the article about the pouch rules and it really contradicts what my Doctor says and what my surgical weightloss tem says. I'm worried because like many of you I'm scared of gaining back the weight. I'm afraid of streaching out my pouch. In the articles it says you should water log your pouch. It says to drink aas much water as you can between meals and then fifteen minutes before eating a meal you should drink as much water as your pouch can hold. And then you shouldn't drink anything more for an hour after your meal. Instead of snacking you should drink as much water as your pouch can hold as well. It also says that meals shouldn't last for more then fifteen minutes and that you should space your meals like five hours apart. My weight loss team says that you should never drink half an hour before or half an hour after meals. It says that all meals should take half an hour to eat. They said that drinking fluids within a half an hour of your meal can strech out your pouch and will push foods through more quickly and add to dumping or the foamies. It also says that going too long between meals will make you more hungry and cause overeating. They recamend snacking and suggest that you eat protein for your snack. Ok so I guess what I want is input for those of you are success stories at maintaining your weight loss sucess. There were many other things that were contradictions as well I hope pthers will read this article and then share your advice. Thanks Sue

| Super Moderator | The rules can change with experience. It isn't something that won't change, or can't be changed. The water loading is to swell, not your pouch, but the intestines. It's because your stoma--the opening of your pouch to the intestine is always open. So, the suggestion is to water load the intestine, make it swell up and close, so the meal will stay in your pouch for a while. Surgeons and bariatric teams will modify their rules with experience. If you've been given a different guide to go by, stick to that, because that is how your surgeon's team will be looking after you. Hope this helps you understand.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | first things first many of us have differnt surgens start there. what my surgen tells me is right your surgen may not. Many of my rules are similar to yours but they do have differnces. I key is folow your teams rules because they are the ones treating you. Other then that like DOC has told in many other post it is very hard to strech your pouch out in the begining its moreless happens down the road with bad eating habbits. Ill let ya in on this to ya really are not hungry ever after this surgery you moreless eat because ya know ya have to. so snacking and grazeing happen more down the road to i think. all in all I would just folow your surgens rules

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | also keep in mind i think these rules are for later on. i know my surgeons office hasnt provided me with paperwork for any stage past my next appointment date. so i guess its possible that this doesnt apply at your stage? true indeed we all get different instruction, BUT i believe its based on their experience with patients and is very general. at the end of each visit i am encouraged to try things and report back. they want to know what works best for me. and also, i think a lot of our drs have told us things will stretch us out to keeo us away from doing that particular behavior. not to say that they are liars or ill informed, but a lot of this is based on modifying behaviors. in the end youhave to find what works best for you. | Super Moderator | smaguire's surgery date is Feb 2007. The pouch rules are for beyond 6 mo, so, Sue'd be at the time when this starts to kick in. When's your next follow up appt? If your 6 mo visit isn't yet, then see what they tell you to do for the next 6 mos. At any rate, your surgeon's team will give you the rules that worked best for their patients, so best to follow that. (((((HUGS)))))

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Thank for all the advice, I'm just a little panicky because i'm afraid that I will fall back into bad habits I know some people that has happened to. So I'm trying to find all the info i can on how not to waste this opportunity. My next appointment is on the 28th of this month. So I will be talking to my surgeon about all of this. I have so many other questions. Like I have heard people talking about protein shots? I had never heard of anything like that till i came here. I also heard that some of my tieredness and dizziness could be bcause I'm not getting enough vit-b12. I'm takeing the subligual that they recomended but my levels were really low before surgery. I have a friend who needs to get it through shots. Any input on this would be helpful too. Sue

| Super Moderator | For the stuff about supplements, check out the Vitamins and Nutrition forum. The I'm a little confused thread has some detailed discussion about VB12. As for the protein shots, they actually aren't shots as in injections, but a concentrated liquid form product that you drink. Here's the thread where the subject came up. The name of the product is in one of the posts on the second page.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | One of the key things that is becoming more common is what I've got going on. An overlarge stoma. If I water load then my pouch which is still 1 oz (seen on the small intestine series pics 5 yrs post) will only hold a little bit of food and I'm satisfied. However if I don't because my stoma and scar tissue have relaxed the food goes right into the intestine and I can eat a lot more. Water loading is a GOOD THING to get into the habit of. NEVER EAT / DRINK AT THE SAME TIME!! --hear that--EVER-- Use a timer or better yet get a watch with a countdown timer you can set for 25-35 min. AFTER you eat to wait until you drink again, then only very slowly. Snacks ARE meals for us posties. Eating small 'meals' several times a day is best to keep blood sugars up and to stay satisified. ---Water Loading it's a GOOD THING--- --bree
