Default which surgery?

Ok I know I've been mia lately but as some of you know my Mom has end stage leukemia and all my spare time is spent doing things with her or for her. Ok enough with that I have already started my 6 mo dr supervised diet and have lost 20 lbs in 8 weeks. As of the beginning of March I'm switching insurance companies and starting the ball rolling for surgery. I've read a lot of helpful information from each and everyone of you, but here is my question. How did you decide 150% that the surgery you had was the right one for you, what made you choose the type of surgery you did over another type like lap band? I'm so totally and utterly confused. One second I want gastric bypass, the next second I want lap band. I'm so wishy washy and I just thought if I put the question out there you all could maybe shed some light on the subject. I can't figure out what is right for me!!!! Any help you can give me would be great and forgive me for being mia even if I don't post I'm trying to read your posts at least a couple of times a week if I can.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Sounds like you have a lot to deal with right now for sure. I will keep your mom in my daily prayers for sure. My son and husband had the bypass surgery and I was considering the lap band as it was less invasive however after looking at the information and once I attended the informational classes and found out that the band has to be refilled at least once a year or more and the insurance would not pay for the fill. I also figured knowing me I would be able to work around the lap band easier than I can the bypass. Therefore the bypass.

Sorry about what you are going thru. I also will pray for you and your family.

THe big reason I went with the bypass was because insurance would not cover lap band. My insurance (Tricare prime) still considers it experimental. But after I researched everything I would have the bypass anyway. Did not want followup maintenance appointments.

Good luck with everything. Mattie

Keeping you and your Mom in my prayers.

I think the best way to decide which type is to talk it out with your surgeon, actually, discuss how much weight you need to lose, what life style you expect after surgery, etc. The surgeon can give you his/her opinion based on all the medical/physical/psych data that he/she has on hand, bring in their experiences with other patient into the equation, and let you know the pros and cons of each procedure in regards to you.
So, during the months you are on supervised diet. just gather as much basic--meaning medical-- info as you can on all types of surgery, and check out their similarities, differences, the advantages, disadvantages.

Honestly, I went into my consult with the thought in mind that I was going to get the lap band since I didnt want to stay in teh hospital and they did that one as an outpatient. When the ARNP showed some slides and said that there are many ways to cheat with the lap band and introduced a guy that had only lost like 17 lbs in a year because he found ways to cheat, that made up my mind for me. I am normally a strong person with a lot of Will Power, but I was really unsure of THIS! So, I opted for the bypass and feel like it was the best decision that I could have ever made.

I was sure the lapband was for me. I went to see the Dr. and he told me my BMI was so high insurance wouldn't cover it unless I lost about 100 lbs. I told him if I could lose the 100 I could loose the rest w/o surgery. He then said my other option was to pay the $18,000 myself. Yeah right I don't have that kind of petty cash in my bank account. I prayed on it and looked at my options...After much review and having had the bypass I am glad. I am forced to eat correctly and I know I would have cheated with the lap band. I was told bypass is 50% mental 50%
surgery and lap band is 90% mental and 10% surgery. If I could do the 90% on my own again I wouldn't need the surgery. Good luck on your decision...pray on it and study the two types. I will keep you and your mom in my prayers.

My ins does not cover the lap band. So that kind of made up my mind for me. And I guess my reasons for getting the surgery at all was because I wanted my life back. I do want it back. I am tired of not being able to walk far and do all the things I used to.

Thanks, to all of you who replied to my question and offered insight. Thanks also for all of your thoughts and prayers for my Mom too, I really appreciate it. I guess I'll keep researching and gathering as much info as possible. Thanks again

That is exactly how I went into my consult....I wanted the lap band. However, after hearing about all the different types, I pretty much went into my 1:1 with the surgeon with an open mind. I asked her which method she thought would be best for ME. I haven't had the surgery, but I feel that I am making the best and most informed decision for me.
