Default Iron Rich Foods

Just wanted to share this with all the concern about iron and absorption. Lisa gave us great information. I almost always forget to even take my iron pills however my iron levels remain very good. I see a hematologist every 3 mths and i have been able to maintain my levels mainly on the foods that i eat. Hope this adds to the info Lisa provided.

For iron deficiency anemia in women, a diet with iron rich foods along with iron supplements is often recommended. Absorption of iron from food is influenced by multiple factors. One important factor being the form of the iron. Heme Iron, found in animal sources, is highly available for absorption. Non-heme iron on the other hand, found in vegetable sources, is less available. Iron rich foods of an iron rich diet are listed below:

Iron Rich Foods containing Heme Iron

Excellent Sources Good Sources

Clams
Pork Liver
Oysters
Chicken Liver
Mussels
Beef Liver

Beef
Shrimp
Sardines
Turkey

Iron Rich Foods containing Non-Heme Iron

Excellent Sources Good Sources

Enriched breakfast cereals
Cooked beans and lentils
Pumpkin seeds
Blackstrap Molasses

Canned beans
Baked potato with skin
Enriched pasta
Canned asparagus

Warning: Pregnant women should not eat liver because of its very high Vitamin A content. Large amounts of Vitamin A can be harmful to the baby.

The absorption of Non-heme iron can be improved when a source of heme iron is consumed in the same meal. In addition, the iron absorption-enhancing foods can also increase the absorption of non-heme iron. While some food items can enhance iron absorption, some can inhibit or interfere iron absorption. Avoid eating them with the iron-rich foods to maximize iron absorption.

Iron Absorption Enhancers Iron Absorption Inhibitors
Meat/fish/poultry
Fruits: Orange, Orange Juice, cantaloupe, strawberries, grapefruit etc
Vegetables: Broccoli, brussels sprouts, tomato, tomato juice, potato, green & red peppers
White wine
Red Wine, Coffee & Tea
Vegetables: Spinach, chard, beet greens, rhubarb and sweet potato
Whole grains and bran
Soy products

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

thanks for shareing a wonderful list.
I do eat many items on that list
on a regular basis...

I definitely am one that isnt absorbing it.
AND from what i have learned all the supplementing
wont help .FOR those not taking iron and have good levels be
sure your getting the foods on the list. I am also
having TOm issues have been since surgery so
I am sure thats another big issue of anermia. tom

Thanks for the list. Wish that I could get decent clams out here like there were in NY & CT. Not too many clams out on the PRARIE! LOL!

Talking FYI: *Nori* Seaweed paper

I know some of you know *nori* seaweed paper which is a Japanese staple.
I was checking out the nutrition values of this the other day.
Okay, so seaweed such as cooked as miso soup is difficult for the pouch until you have been post op for 2 years or more. However, these papers should be easier for your pouch to deal with.

So, here are the basic nutrition values per 100 g.
Protein around 40g, less than 4g fat, around 40g carbs (which seems a lot, but most of this is cellulose/fiber actually) plus around 11mg iron. Tons of other vitamins and minerals, too. Calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphate, etc etc.
Total less than 190 kcal.
Of course, getting 100g of this stuff isn't easy, but considering the nutritious facts, if you find nori to your liking, it can be a good snack item even if a few small pieces.
