Question Thrush????

I was wondering if anyone has had any problems with thrush? My mom and dad know someone who just had the surgery a week ago and my dad came home last night and said that the woman is miserable and has horrible thrush and was told that this is something that happens with GBS. Is that true and if so is there anything to do to help with this problem? Thanks, I am getting questions from my family, they are worried rightfully so but I told them I would ask. Thanks for any help in this area you can provide!
I go for my EGD on Tuesday and pscy eval on thursday. Hopefully then I will get more info on when to expect the surgery. I am praying that the Lord opens all the windows that need to be opened if this is the path he wants me to choose. I am definately wanting this path.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I am so sorry to admit that I don't know anything about the thrush issue. I hope that someone on here that might know can answer your questions.... just please do me a favour and follow any and all of your surgeons advice as much as possible to reduce your risks of complications... it will make a world of difference to your overall experience. This surgery does have some serious risks, but it also has some equally serious blessings. Good luck with everything.

Thrush basically occurs when your immune system is compromised in one way or another. Serious illness, major surgery, nutritional deficiency, etc. So, it is possible for thrush to occur with GBS, but it's just as likely to occur with other major surgeries of the digestive tract, as these surgeries are major, and balanced nutrition can be lacking because of the limited oral intake.
If I were you, I would not worry about it overmuch, just be careful that you get in what your surgeon requires, although in the earliest stages, it will not be easy, and take good care of your health right up to your surgery to ensure the best of the results.
Like Janae says, stick dilligently to your surgeon's program.

OUT of all the people i talk to on vairous weight loss surgery sites, support groups I have only met one person who came down with THRUSH and she was about 10 months out when it occurred. SHE admitted that she had been traveling for work and neglecting to take her vitamins and that
is probably what triggered her bout with it. I dont know if that helps
you any but i figured i would add what i have seen from my experience
around the world of surgery.

Thank you so much for all of your posts, they definately have helped. I figured that it was probably something along the lines of not enough nutrition but now i can let my Mom know not to worry. Thank you all! I really enjoy the support. I am getting really excited again and started my protein shakes the other day. Not bad so far. Where do most people get their shakes from? I tried the samples they gave me so far and am going to try to go to GNC today and try some more out. I also started multi vitamins and am going to start calcium today. Anything else anyone can suggest that I should start taking? I also have been chewing things(when I remember) very slow and very much! I read you post about what to do before surgery Lisa and it has been helpful! thank you!

NO need to thank me COURTNEY! I love helping others and thats why i am here and part of this board.

I know this site has an estore that sells protein shakes but i am on a budget being a family of 5 and im also the lazy type and use a ready
made shake that i can use in crunch and in a hurry. I purchase from walmart in 4 packs the EAS Advant Edge Carb Control Shakes and i love all three flavors they come in. I also drink HOODS carbcountdown chocolate milk as a treat thru my day!

JUSt be careful what you like now PRE OP you may not like POST OP. I was never EVER a picky eater. ITS funny but some tastes are complete ly opposite for me! GO FIGURE....

i also have used many sugar free products to spice up the water drinking. WATEr alone gets very old and boring...i have used sugar free kookaide, Crystal light in all flavors, PROPEL, Diet Snapple just to name a few as well as good ODE water!
ALL the best ............which multi vitamin are you useing i use the CENTRUM chewables and i take both kinds of calcium carbonate and citrate being its controversal. I started taking BIOTIN pre op to help with HAIR issues. IT wont stop the hair thinning phase post op but i do find it helps the new growth grow faster and healthier!

HOPE i helped and keep asking away!

Thanks again that is so helpful! My nutritionist told me to find some and get some and stock up on them and I was wondering that cause I have heard everyone say that their tastes change so much! Another question that I guess I can ask my surgeon but something I just thought of last night. Can you have any alcohol? I am talking about once or twice a month having a margarita when out to dinner with my husband or the "girls". Or a glass of wine? Thanks so much for all your info and help!

MOST doctors frown upon alchol use for several reasons
1. EMPTY wasteful calories can stall weight losses
2. IT goes to our liver direct with new plumbing
3 some say that get pretty drunk fast...with our different absorption

I would think ocasional is fine! BUT personally im waiting till goal to test that water any!
ALL the best and talk to ur surgeon for his rules on that topic, they are all different

Yes, alcohol and WLS seems to be a rather bad match on occasions.
It is best to stay away from it at least until several months out. If you can always stick to just one glass of something once in a while, most people manage well enough, but if you go beyond that, there are people who've had bad experiences.
If you are careful, and if your surgeon says that occasional one glass is OK, you'll probably be fine, but beware since it is one of the more common things that causes trouble for WLSers.
Hope this helps.

Thank you all for you input I kind of figured that and I didn't want to be thinking or giving out info that was not correct. I definately would not want one of those dumping episodes that I have heard about or it going directly to my liver. Thanks again for the info! This site is great! I Have used everyone's input and advice to help ease my husband's mind and other family memebers questions, not sure about easing their minds yet, I can always hope! Tomorrow is my EGD! Hopefully it will still be onward and upward after that.
take care,
Courtney
