5' 6" Height: | Hi Everyone, I just read Deb's post about Krispy Kreams and how upon really tasting them they were greasy and awful. It got me thinking about bad habbits that I have with food that are almost as automatic as breathing, like gobbleing which is no longer an option. I'm sure that some of you have bad (overcame) habbits and thought maybe if they were posted, could be warning signs and ahh moments for others, like me! One of my biggest, nastiest habits I have is eating when talking on the phone. Before WLS I could eat 1,000's of calories while talking to friends, going from one course to another. Besides probably sounding link a T-Rex chomping tree-tops, by the time I was done with a 45 minute evening conversation I would be ready to pop. Last night I got a phone call while I was mixing up my dinner. Without thinking, I started to eat and before I knew it my meal was nearly gone without me tasting it. Besides not enjoying the meal, I had gobbled it down way too fast and thank God I had mushed it up (salmon salad) because I know it wouldn't have been chewed correctly. Needless to say, I felt bloated and rotton for the rest of the evening, even after walking for nearly an hour. In hind-sight I know now that the next time someone calls, I need to either put down the food or ask the person if I may call them back later. It's just a matter of putting my health first and taking care of me. I would love to hear all about your former bad food habits & healthy corrections. Kat

| Cub Reporter | Hi Kat, phew so many previous bad food habits it's hard to list them all, but here were some of my worst offenders. No breakfast Finishing all the kids leftovers Serving up as much as hubby (who was much much more active than me) Eating in the car (not only dangerous but falls into that pretend I havent really eaten category because your not paying attention to it) Eating fast fast fast Secret eating (quickly eating food when everyone was out) Crikey, I could keep going and going. I think one of the biggest changes is that I've slowed myself down and make meals an actual event not something done while not paying attention to it - and I enjoy the food much more for it now, savouring the flavour of good healthy nutritious food rather than inhaling it for the two minute feel good factor! | Administrator | Truth be told, many of us disengage our brain as we start eating in a weird state of denial. There were so many times I would find myself almost to the end of a bag of (almost anything) and think to myself, Do I even really taste this anymore. My hand in mouth motion became robotic. Ice cream was a great offender. After several bites, it lost its flavor, but that never stopped me. Learning to slow down the brain to a point where I actually think through what I am eating has been one of the biggest lessons I have had to learn over the 9 years. I have no idea if this relates at all, but your post triggered these thoughts.

5' 6" Height: | Craig, Slowing down the brain to think rather then disengagement not only relates, but for me is the core of my problem. Disengagement is such a good word. I have to learn to LET myself think and skip the disengagement. That's called kicking my addiction. God help me and anyone else with Mr. Jones. I feel as though I just went through a therapy session. Thinking through the above has been a cathartic experience. Do you have a tip jar Craig? Kat

| Super Moderator | Kat, not about bad eating habits, but here's something that made me think about food about a month ago, and it may interest you, you being a chef. I watched a TV program on an exchange between French chefs (from France) and Japanese chefs (of Japanese cuisine). One of the subjects brought up was that with French cuisine, the point is in merging the tastes with rich sauces, creams, and gravy. With Japanese cuisine, it's about bringing out the original taste of the ingredients, and enhancing the natural flavor of the main ingredient. The individual items of Japanese course menus are one to a few bites' size at most, and the stress is on seasonal food. We have so many menus for any particular season and/or occasion. For the Japanese, food has a lot to do with traditional events and seasons, and carry many memories of happy times with family. Maybe that's the crux of what prevents a lot of people from over eating, or mindless eating, though I can't say for sure. Just my thoughts here. 'Kay, off my soap box. ((((((HUGS)))))))
