Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Don't get too concerned. To me it seems like that would be an expected result, but Doc will give you a better answer. Post-op you just can't eat a whole lot and your body is getting it's energy from your stored fat, so in order to do that you have to use that stored fat and it produces ketones as a waste product. I know when I was pregnant they kept me overnight because of that, but it wasn't good for the baby and they had to hydrate me. I'm sure Doc will straighten all of this out and let us know if it really is normal and for how long it can be expected if it is normal. Doc - does it hurt your kidneys at all?

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I'm interested too. I hear conflicting recommendations about exactly how much a WLS person needs.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | They are produced in the body when fats, rather than glucose are used to produce energy. Ketones are normally present in the bloodstream, but when their concentration exceeds 70 mg/dl, they start to appear in the urine - this is "ketosis." Trace to moderate ketones a few hours after a meal means I'm burning my fat reserves and/or recently-eaten fat for energy between meals in a normal process of metabolism. I'm excreting the ketones which are in excess of my energy requirements to maintain a psysiological acid/base balance (ketones are acidic). Being in ketosis means your body has burned a large amount of fat in response to the fact that it didn't have sufficient glucose available for energy needs. Under everyday conditions, the carbohydrates you eat are converted to glucose, which is the body's primary source of energy. Whenever your intake of carbohydrates is limited to a certain range, for a long enough period of time, you'll reach a point where your body draws on its alternate energy system, fat stores, for fuel. |
