| How did you prepare before for after?
One of the first things I did was to train myself to chew and chew and chew and ... It was good exercise and helped develop the jaw muscles. I also at the same time started to live the 30-30 rule regarding drinking and eating. THAT was hard!!!
I ordered a bunch of protein powders, broth powders, vitamins, etc. from the bariatric store my surgeon's office recommended. I made sure I knew how to use them and was comfortable with them. Much of the early post-op liquid phase is indistinguishable from the pre-op liquid diet, so that worked out well.
I also made sure that we had a decent supply of high-protein soups and other food that I could put in the mixer and puree. Stuff that I would enjoy, not just a big tub of cottage cheese!
I went through all the nutritional information I had been given and checked and double-checked to see if I had covered all bases. I knew I wouldn't be all that sharp for a little while after, so I drilled myself to be sure that I'd do the right things even while operating at reduced mental capacity (no wise cracks please! )
Okay, so I can get a little carried away. As an engineer, I believe in planning things out and anticipating what could go wrong so I can prevent it. I may have over-prepared, but I thought it best to be too ready than the other way.
I don't remember much of the first week home. Drugs are such a marvelous thing! But I came through it okay, so I must have been doing the right things during that time.

| I assume waiting 30 mins between eating and drinking. I just did the "nesting" thing where I cleaned house really well, did all possible laundry, stocked my pantry really well for my family as well as protein powders, etc., and prepared some meals and froze them so that when I didn't feel like cooking I could throw in a casserole for my family.

I purchased soups and puddings, things like that... ended up hating them all and eating stuff I thought I wouldn't like. Preplanning was a waste of time for me!

We have a 30:30:30 rule (No drinking 30 minutes before, take 30 minutes to eat and then no drinking 30 minutes afterwards). I just timed my family (I'm still on liquids). My husband finished in 12, daughter 1: 14 minutes, daughters 2 and 3 were having a contest to see who could be last and they made it 26 minutes. It is a pretty long time! I hope I will be able to follow through.

Once in a buffet restaurant I was bored while chewing endlessly, so I started watching how people eat. I think I saw some of my own former bad habits, but back then I wasn't yet accountable for my actions!
It was interesting nonetheless, though. One guy would fork in a load, chew 3-4 times, maybe swallow, maybe not, then fork in another, repeat as necessary, all the while carrying on a fast-paced conversation with his table mates, who were all eating as he was. He cleaned his plate in the time it took me to eat a chicken wing! (I was never that bad, was I?) He ate two more piled-high plate loads in the time it took me to eat a thigh.
Anyone else ever done that? Seeing how we got to where we were before we decided to regain control?

Wow such planning! Me....just had protein supplements and vitamins before hand. When I started to eat real food it was something I have to really think about. It has gotten better since the time I ate 2 slices of turkey lunch meat and az slice of cheese in about 6 min. WOOOOOO never again! I was in huggin the bowl if you know what i mean? that was a good lesson my tool taught me I kinda think pre planning would have been better for my brain though?

I stocked up with a variety of foods and protein powders, premade shakes, sf jello and pudding, and the 99% fat free cream soups.
I made sure that I had a lot of DVDs to watch the first few weeks so that I could avoid all the food commercials on TV.
I made sure I had all my vitamins and stuff on hand to deal with constipation if it happened.
My husband made a bunch of broth and soups that I could eat and we froze then in 1 cup portions. They were so much better than the purchased broth.
I bought a 12 pack of 24 oz water and each morning placed a full bottle by the computer, the bed, and the couch so that I'd always have water at hand and so I could keep track of how much I drank.
I bought a good software program for logging what I ate (I hated the on line food tracking options - they were clumsy) to make sure I was gettting all the protein I needed.
I took measurements and "before" pictures. I've been doing new pictures and measurements every 5 weeks. They've helped me make it through the stalls I've had.
