| Was anyone here ever part of a historical event?
Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone was ever a part or involved in some historical event? It could be anything from woodstock to 911 or even something that was national/international but non historical. Tell your story. I think it would be interesting to read where everyone came from.

I was stationed in Seoul when a North Korean national tried to take out the president and ended up killing his wife instead. His wife had been very popular, and there was considerable sentiment against the North and also Japan, as the killer was using a gun issued to the Japanese police force.
There were massive protests in the streets, comparable to what you saw recently in Iran before things got totally out of hand. I was told by one South Korean riot cop (in no uncertain terms!!) that if I insisted on taking pictures, he would ram his nightstick up my telephoto lens! He tried to warn me in English, which I pretended not to know as I responded to him in French. He got what the press might describe as "impatient" with me, so I went to the Canadian Embassy and took some really cool pictures out of their windows!
Fun times!!

I lived within 8 miles and worked within 5 miles of Three Mile Island when the threat of melt down was going on back in the late 70's. If I was at home when we got the evacuation order I had to head north and if I was at work I had to head south. I had a packed suitcase in my car for a month. Ironically if it would have melted down it wouldn't have mattered where we went, the land wouldn't have been inhabitable for a 150 mile radius.
A little know fact, there were no flies or insects within 4 miles of the nuclear reactor for 5 years after the incident, and birth defects were way up within a year after. Cancer also rose in the immediate area.

I live 10 min from flight 93 crash site on 9/11. That was something that I will never ever forget. If anyone ever gets the chance to visit the memorial, it is really something you will always remember.
I also live 10 min from the 9 for 9 coal miners that were trapped under ground.....

I was living in Nuernberg, West Germany (as it was called then) when the Libyans blew Pan Am 103 out of the sky over Scotland in '88. I knew a lot of military, and they were highly incensed about the way they had been treated by the State Department. Y'see, the military was required to travel on a US flag carrier, but the State Dept wasn't. When State got the word that there was an attack planned against a US carrier, they transferred all their folks to foreign flag airlines, and made the vacant seats available for the military (forgetting to tell the military about the warning!) There were a lot of service folks and families on board that flight.
The event raised security sky-high in Frankfurt, and Peanut was flying over to join me a few weeks after it happened. I went to the airport to meet her flight. It was the first time she had flown more than a few hundred miles, and I knew she would be disoriented, so I wanted to get out on the concourse and meet her plane. Only problem was the dozens of machine-gun-toting German security forces standing around looking suspiciously at everyone and checking anyone heading out to a concourse, closely.
I won't reveal how I got past them. I didn't have a ticket, but I broke through security anyway and was waiting there when she got in. Standing there as she got off the plane, she looked right through me and wandered off in the direction of the baggage claim! She was glad to see me, though, once I introduced myself. (In all fairness, she hadn't seen me in 3 months and didn't know I had grown a beard, and she had never seen the German clothes I was wearing. I did not look like an American!)
It was a tense time over there, but I found a way to lighten it up a bit.
Later, I was over there a lot on business trips as the communist empire was crumbling.
My first trip over there was at the height of the Cold War in '78. I got a tour of the Iron Curtain from a group of Army Military Intelligence guys. Talk about a stone cold sober, wake-you-up-at-night-in-a-cold-sweat type of experience!! We played our war games until the US side had lost enough ground that the nuclear release was the only option left. After we dropped the nukes on the Russians, we folded up the exercise and went home. The justification for that was that once we nuked them, we were toast in their nuclear counter-strike, so it was useless to play past that point of planned suicide.
I don't like war. There are times it's necessary, but it's a hideous thing.

I was on my way to the Kent State demonstration when I got a flat tire. I didn't have a spare and had to walk home to get help.

I lived in Chevy Chase, MD, just north of Washington DC as Dad was on the Japanese Embassy staff there from 1961 to 1965, which for me was 7th-10th grade. The Cuban missle crisis, I was old enough to understand as I watched it unfold on TV, and of course, we lived close enough to feel the tension in the air. JFK's assissination just stopped the world for a few days--we went to Pennsilvania Ave to watch the funeral cortage pass. I saw a blur of light blue against the darkened windows of the limosine carrying Jackie and the two children. To this day, I believe that the light blue blur was John Jr.

At the time that 9/11 occurred I was working for an air ambulance service. I was dispatching that day when the Twin Towers were hit. Now, mind you, I did not live nor work in New York City, but we still felt the tension here in Texas when I got the phone call from the FAA to ground all aircraft. I had 2 aircraft in the air when this tragedy occurred. They had to land and land then, not a good situation and very very nerve racking. Not only did that situation cause me to lose sleep that night, the scar that our beloved country will forever bear still can make me fret...
