I did it last year. Was at walmart by 4 am.
I dont know if i would do it again the crowds were horrbile.
BUT i got great gifts at great prices. I am also registered
for a site that sends me advance sale flyers for this date

I was wondering the same thing. I thought maybe the Friday of the Easter weekend? I can't really understand it being called that for anything else. Please tell us.

I figured out it was the Friday after Thanksgiving when the stores kick off the sales for the Holiday season...I believe there are stores that open in the wee hours of the morning, and shoppers line up in the more wee hours of the morning to be the first in line...
The equivalent for that here would be Jan 2nd when stores kick of the New Year/Winter sales, and have tons of surprise bags full of goodies that are 2-3 times or even more, worth than the price of the bags which are anywhere from around $10 to $200 to $500 and even more...

BLACK FRIDAY is the friday SALE day after thanksgiving. IT was traditionally the kick off for holiday shopping. THIS is the day when retailers hope to bring their red numbers of losses into the black and
finish the year in profit. IT usually is the biggest shopping day of the year
and with competitive sales from all the retailers its a cut throat sales event day to draw the crowds in to SPEND money! AND make the year a wonderful
profitable year of sales.
I think the name of the day stinks it reminds me more of the name given to the stock market when that crashed years back.
HOPE i explained that pretty well.

Last year with all my found energy i hit the WALMART door busters
sales at walmart. HAD my kids ready to shop there at 4 am. LAST year
it was nuts people trying to get that 300 dollar laptop, tickets given out and a line that went from the doors to the street, it was insane! MY kids enjoyed it and I remember i got the things i wanted, electric choppers for few people on my holiday list, my lexmark 4 in 1 printer for daycare pc...
and it was cool. WHEN i was done i went the LAB at 6:00 am had my blood drawn for my upcomeing surgeon visit and then off to breakfast at
mcdonalds with the kids. IT was fun but i had done really well on a few a gifts that i got for dirt cheap.
THAT site i put up lists in advance the sales flyers so you can pick a store that has what you need.
I am not sure yet what im going to do shop or not but i do make sure my clients know i want the day off. I was insane enough last year to even hit thanksgiving day at kmart for a few bargains. HOWEVER, that store has closed up locally for me now.
As for your stores in manhattan....i bet MACY's will have some great EARLY bird speicals going on that day!
Well happy shopping on black friday.
Its fun but i dont like the crowds.

ok. I don't think we do that here in this area being that our Thanksgiving days are different. I asked my mom what it meant and she had no idea either. We do have the boxing day sales. Never shopped then before but Roo wants to this year, We'll see
