Default When did you start exercising?

I know everyone heals differently, but how soon after your surgery did you start exercising? I already have a routine down as to what works best for me before surgery, but would like to get an estimation of how long I'll have to wait.

Since I've been exercising on an almost daily basis, I feel real crappy when I don't. I know that I'm going to feel drained after surgery, but I also know the sooner I can get back into my routine, the better it will make me feel.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

You'll probably be up and walking in the hospital. So that's a good exercise. Start out with short distances a day or two after you get home, the sooner the better. Extend the distance after a couple of days, until you're walking at least 30 minutes. OR, there are chair exercises you can do--these exercise DVD's are available many places either for sale, or you can rent them. Yes, you'll feel tired for 3 -4 weeks after surgery, but you need to start an exercise routine as soon as possible. Walking will help remove excess gas, and help your BM situation to get things moving as you begin liquids, soft foods, protein shakes, etc.

it depends on if you had surgery laproscopically or open.

I walked 3-4 times a day about 5 min each time round and round the patio and then up and down the block every day until 6-8 weeks post then started very slowly with many many checks from the doc.

but I also was married to a personal trainer at the time so we did specific things that not everyone chooses to do..in my after pic you can see I had a different goal for my body post op than most.

as always...ask YOUR DOC what you are released to do and should be doing.

didn't they send home post op instructions?

I barely had my eyes open from surgery before they had me standing up by my bed to begin my walking. I walked around the nurses station every hour with my husband and the head nurse. I walked around the house for the first few days and then began my walking outside. We live in Florida and I had my surgery during Hurricane Season, so I had to get a treadmill. I was not able to work out at all for the first 6 weeks other than walking. Then it was another 6 weeks after my tube was removed and healed before I could start any kind of work outs. One of the easiest things that I have found is a recumbet bike...OH, I love that...you can go for 6 miles and not even know it.

Start off with walking. You should be told to do that as soon as you can get up and move around. For other exercises, especially abs and weight training and stuff, be sure to ask your surgeon for the okays. It usually takes a few months or more before you are released comepletely for all kinds of exercises.
Putting too much pressure on your abs and other muscles prematurely can lead to hernias and other issues. Also ask when you can start lifting heavy weights in daily life for the same reasons.

Hey, we have the same surgery date! Congrats! As far as exercising... I was told I could start walking right away but couldn't lift weights until 6-8 weeks after surgery. This is going to be so hard because I'm used to working out 3-5 times/ week. Just follow what your dr says and I'm sure your recovery will go smoothly. Good luck. Angie

YAY! How exciting. I'm glad to know I have a surgery buddy! Are you super excited?

Thanks for the input. I'm sure I'll get more information when I go in for my pre-op visit on Tuesday. I'm glad you were able to get up and walk right away. That was my biggest concern. I know they say to get up and get moving, I just wasn't sure if that meant a few minutes here and there or actually walking. I can't wait!

This is going to be an awesome journey and I am so glad I found you all to go through it with!

I Was Given The Ok To Walk Until My Month Follow Up & Surgeon Gave Me The Clear For Whatever, Just Don't Hurt Yourself!!!

I Just Started Going To The Gym, & Since Before Surgery I Was Not Doing Anything, It Is Very Difficult To Get Motivated!!!

As Always Check With Your Surgeon!!
