| Super Moderator | I imagine your surgeon would have okayed walking. Start with the distance/speed that is comfortable for you, and increase both distance and speed gradually. No strenous exercise until your surgeon says so. Even with stretching exercise, you will have to confirm with your surgeon. You are still healing, and your organs are getting used to the new layout. It needs time to gain the strength to resist the stress that it has to endure with strenuous exercise like machine traning. Even with treadmills, I think most surgeons say no until at least a month or two out. You may not like our saying, confirm with your surgeon, but the fact is, he is the one who did the surgery, and knows what your physical condition is. Without examining you personally, I can give you no more than a general assessment. The post op progress is unique with each person, so, even if you feel impatient, and feel that you are doing fine, do not do ANYTHING that your surgeon does not okay, because you cannot always tell if you really are fine. You will have to tell your surgeon how you are doing, and have him assess your present physical condition, and determin what your body can and cannot take. Don't mess up the results of the surgery because you do something your surgeon tells you not to but you do because you think you feel fine. As with your experience with dumping on a wee amount of crackers, even if it seems fine, if your body is not ready for it, it will revolt. I imagine you want to succeed with this, and the shortest route to success is to follow your surgeon's instructions to a tee. (((((HUGS)))))) and good luck on your journey.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I know chuppy girl you dont want to hear talk to your doctor but im seeing every surgeon has different protocal for this! SORRY to say. MINE only wanted walking the first 3 months to be sure i didnt over due all the healing going on in my stomach so that i didnt give myself a hernia. SO i did walking and swimming (not over doing on swimming) thru the first 3 months and returned to my gym workouts after that. JUST remember you may feel great but your internal plumbing has been redone and that take time to heal! TAKE care good luck and i think its worth the call to ask what he prefers. ALL the best....

| Super Moderator | What you are going through is perfectly normal. Check what other newly post ops--like Pillows --are saying. I have noticed that until you are 2-3 months out, most post ops find that when they try to do something because they think the feel fine, they find that they are easily tired by the simplest of things--things that were nothing pre op. What your body is telling you is that you need to rest and give your body the time to heal.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | GLAD you asked the doctor. REMEMBEr this was MAJOR surgery and your insides are still healing even though you feel fine. DID YOU have your surgery OPEN? but take things easy you dont want to end up getting a hernia and then needing yet another surgery. ALL THE BEST!

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I'm glad you asked your doctor...My doc also said that I can walk too...but, he wanted me to take it really slowly. I started off walking a very slow pace...5 minutes...then 7, then 8...just a very casual walk...nothing too fast. Whenever we go and do some things - get soooo worn out. That actually is the only MAJOR thing that doesn't feel normal. I will be glad when all my energy is restored! He wants me to goal for 20mins...and that is what you did today - right out of the barrell!! TOO MUCH!! Take the walking in smaller incriments...you just WAY OVER-DID it!!! Take it easy...ok?

| Newbie | I am brand new to the board. I am so excited to be here. I just had my surgery on 12/12/06. I did not have it open but laproscopic. I did not have a lap band though either. I have been walking around my small block and there are times when I want to try going around again and then I feel winded. I am glad that I am hearing all of your stories because it lets me know that I am not failing at this part. The last thing that I want is for the doctor to say, "We came all of this way and you are not excercising enough." I am really trying but I do get worn out with just one lap. It has only been 5 days too. I have been doing a complete lap (about 1/3 of a mile for 2 days now). So, I don't know should I be grateful for where I am at this time. I am also getting a little aching pain in my one hip. Is this normal? Thanks for welcoming me in. |
