Default Is there any way to stop/slow the muscle loss?

Hi all. I am 4.5 months out and I have been going to gym regularly for the last two months. In July I had a lean mass of 146 lbs, now it is down to 122 lbs. That is a total muscle loss of 24 lbs. My total weight loss is 71 lbs. The muscle/fat loss ratio does not seem to have changed since I started lifting weights with a trainer 3 times a week. Is there anything I can do to stop/slow the muscle loss or is this just part of the game? I really want to get my body fat % down.

Thanks,
Tonya

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I know that cardio blasts fat and building muscle burns more calories. Are you getting enough protein because if your not then your body takes it from your muscle. Remember your cells need protein to function properly. They say you should have protein after a work out but then again there are so many conflicting articles it's hard to tell which is correct. Doc probably has better insight...

I get about 70 gr of protein. I read a couple articles that recommended a gr for each lb of body weight. That would mean I need 195 gr per day. That does not seem possible without having a protein shake IV hooked into my arm. This was a recommendation for a non-WLS person though.

I read an article in a health journal that you should multiply .36 times your weight and that is how much protein someone needs. I do not know if it is different after you have surgery.

The best time to get in some protein for muscle building is after a good workout.
Since the body can absorb only 20-30g per sitting, probably 8-10g after working out is good enough. Since you have a trainer, have you asked him/her about this?

Since when did you start lifting weights? If it's only been a month or two, I don't think the results will start showing for a couple of months more. Be patient, your effort will pay off, but nothing comes instantly.

why are you thinking it's -muscle- loss? that seems kind of odd to me. Like Doc says any build takes time..

Take it from someone who knows post op muscle building...you really REALLY have to EAT high protein ratios in order to get BUILD otherwise you just stay lean..If you want that healthy strong look you absolutely have to EAT constantly to feed that muscle.

Plus..my trainer and I found that every 3rd day weight training gave our post op bodies better build as we tend towards more break down and need an extra day of rest. No matter what your trainer argues..our bodies ARE DIFFERENT. Therefore, any weight training goals have to be adjusted. every 3rd day, short tough workouts seemed to do best for me. But I also did a weight training/high rep (8-90 reps)class that did a lot of build too. That extra day allows the small breakdowns/tears in the muscle to have time to start repairing.

It's totally worth it but it's hard work..the eating part. Make Cardio workouts a huge part of what you do in addition to the weight training as that gets the FAT off and reveals the muscle quicker. Plus overall it makes for a strong body strength.

I always drink my high protein drink after I workout at the gym. I was told it's better for my body. Good luck and keep up the good work--sounds to me like you are doing everything right.
