| Exercise - What works best?
Folks,
I'm two months out and it seems like I just crawl with the weight loss... Doc doesn't seem terribly impressed with what I've lost. I'm not either, I don't think I even lost 20 pounds this last month. He didn't say it but I got grilled over the exercise and I definitely got the impression that he doesn't think I'm exercising. (I've heard he does that to people he doesn't think are exercising)
But I've been walking pretty much every day. If I don't take a good long walk each day I'm doing yard work or something strenuous for a good long while. I usually walk at least a mile and a half maybe further at a fairly decent rate with no stopping.
So I guess my question is more to the folks that have lost and are losing well, what is working as far as exercise for you? Am I not walking enough? I'm trying to add some weights in too. I don't know if I'm just a slow loser or what. I just have so much to lose I'm worried that I'll not get to where I need to be before the "honeymoon period" is over.
I've been following all the pouch rules and not eating anything too fatty or anything. I've been keeping up with my fluids too. *sigh*
Any ideas?

Cindy, I am right there with you, my friend. My hubby lost like 100 lbs in the first 3 months, and you and I are basically on the same level. I don't know what the answer is. I know I read something about your body going into starvation mode if you didn't eat and that would cause you not to lose.

Hi cindy. I started exercising as soon as I was giving the clear. I started walking first and then I went to low impact aerobics. I have to say it was difficult to get in the habit of it since I didn't exercise much in life before surgery, but now it's pretty addicting. You need something that will help to build the muscle and make sure you get your protein so you can lose weight. You know this I'm sure, but if the muscle is their you won't go into starvation mode and you body will allow you to lose more weight. Just some advice my doc gave me. Hope it helps. |

Well! if you guys are disapointed with your loss how do you think i feel
it is pretty addicting. i would say stick with cardio inthe beginning. jogging, aerobics, kick boxing. tone later!!!! lol! anything to elevate your heart rate and keep it elevated through out is good for the loss. supposedly . as you can see my scale hasnt moved in a while but im learning about exercise. i got some DVDs last week that i too k for a test drive this weekend i've been walking and using an elliptical as well but i am finding a need to switch it up. i hope this works. im getting a little frustrated lol!
PS if someone out there finds exercise in a bottle or pill form let me know

I just walk right now. I would say on most days Im walking about 3 miles. Usually more on the weekends since I have more time. But I have been walking since I got clearance from the surgeon. I think I need to step it up but right now its hard to fit something new into my routine with my kids and their schedules and summer camp and etc...So my kids go back to school in a few weeks and I want to switch things up a notch. but as of now I walk just about 3 miles a day. I do some in the morning and then more at night after work.

I plan to get back into Curves. I was doing it before my surgery and now that I have been cleared to exercise I am anxious to start it back up. There is one just a few blocks from my office and I can do it on my lunch hour.

Thanks ladies! Doc did say I was getting more protein than I needed. I've been hitting those protein slams and I don't do much in the way of carbs. Can you overdo protein and not overdo calories... I'm staying around 800 calories...
I think I'm going to see about joining the gym at work and upping the walking.

For women, over 100g protein will be too much. Probably 80 at most will do the job.

| Excercise?
Okay, so I just want to get on the right track from the start. About two months before surgery I had fallen off the excercise wagon and was not very consistent in my regimen, but prior to that I was walking on my treadmill about 20 - 25 minutes each morning at between 3mph to 3.5 mph. I also was doing some weight and resistance training in the evenings for my upper body.
My plan was to get back to this routine eventually. I started this morning with just walking. I got up to about 2.4mph and did about 15 minutes (1/2 mile) before I pooped out. But I figure I have to start small. My doc's orders are to start right away, nothing about needing "clearance". But honestly, up until today, I'd just been building my energy level back up after surgery. Eventually, he wants me to get to 45 minutes of walking a day. Its not the walking -- its the time crunch I will have after going back to work. As it is I rise at 5am to get my excercise in.
Curves sounds like maybe an interesting approach, there is one near my home I might be able to join. YMCA is SO expensive but maybe their classes would be good. I have my own tredmill at home that I use.
I just want to get going right again but I don't think I will ever be able to use the term "excercise is addicting"?!
