My trainer tells me it's important to start with cardio for a warm-up (to get your heart rate up), then move to weights. I started off with lighter weights and more reps, as I'm looking to trim versus build mass.
After weights, then 30 minutes of cardio is recommended. (your body produces more fat burners with cardio than weights, so if you start off wtih cardio, you will have LESS strength to lift weights afterwards!!)
As far as a specific regiment with free weights, I'm not sure (I use the machines at the Y). I'm sure someone will come along with suggestions!
CONGRATS on getting started with the workout...the first step is ALWAYS the hardest!

It's kinda hard to describe...put your hands up straight over your head...both hands grasping the weight (20 pounds or more)....bend your elbows, lowering the weight BEHIND your head, NOT bending your arms, but just lowering it back and letting your biceps do the work. Take it straight back up, then lower etc. This will work the back of your arms!

I Go To The Gym And As Part Of The Membership You Get A Free Training Session With A Trainer, WHO HAPPENS TO BE MY NEIGHBOR. I Always Start Out With Cardio And TheN THE Weight Machines. I Find Im Stronger After Cardio. If I Was Start Out With The Weight MACHINES I Wouldnt Do As Well. One Thing That Is Great About The Weight Machines At The GYM Each Machine Has A Diagram Of What Part Of The Body You Are Working Out. So Its All Drawn Out For You And The Trainer Of Course Gives Me Tips And How To Properly Use The Machines. I Usually Spend 35 Minutes On The Treadmill, 15 Minutes On The Eliptical And An Other 30 Minutes On The Weight Machines AND AS TIME GOES ON I INCREASE MY TIME. I Have To Say I Have Some Crazy Bat Wings On My Arms And Ever Since I Started Using The Weight Machines I Have Def Seen A Difference In My Arms And I Feel So Much Stronger!!!!!!!!

I had to go back to the recumbent bike (which I love) after my hystero and it was awesome. You can create a music list or watch TV and during the commercials do a faster speed while the commercials are on then go back to a regular solid speed. I got a lot of great cardio.
That is ONE more thing I'd like to buy for my workout room in the garage..I've got the 2K treadmill with wireless heartmonitor which you can create a workout based on heart rate and all kinds of stuff, the 2K weight gym with leg press added to it..it does everything and has a ab bar too, the standing adjustable boxing bag..the recumbent bike would be the best thing to add to the mix!
With my injury I can't do a regular bike, may never be able to do the 'bike thing' but recumbent is AWESOME!!!
