| Family making me NERVOUS
My sister e-mailed me an article last night from the New York Times (I think) about the comlications of WLS. I know she is worried and isn't sure I'm making a good decision to have the surgery. And she wants to make sure I know both sides of the surgery (which I already do). BUT, stuff like that scares the weebie jeebies out of me. I felt really calm when I left my doctor's appt last Friday, but now I'm very nervous. It will be nice when the next two weeks are over and I make it to my surgery day.

Awww, ((((((HUGS))))))
Since this is a major surgery, of course, there will be complications. Also, as with any surgery, there will be complications post op. The point is, with experienced surgeons, immediate post op complications are around 5% which is the same with any major surgery. As for long term complications, much of them can be avoided by good aftercare.
You'll be in excellent hands, trust your surgeon, and you'll be fine.
Though, come to think of it, since you are a nurse, you already understand all this very well, I'm sure.

I've always found it easier to be the NURSE instead of the PATIENT
But, you are so right about the aftercare--I plan to be very compliant.
Not sure if this has ever been mentioned here, but I bought the WLS for Dummies book and love it. It's an easy read with tons of good info in it.

Well for me wannabethin the risks of me walking around morbidly obesite out weighed for me the risks of the surgery. So i had to take this chance
to be healthy and i was given this opportunity.
I know for me I was a stroke or heart attack waiting to happen. SO the risks for the surgyery were equal in my eyes. I went for the surgery and one year I am so happy and healthy. I have a new chance at life
and im healthy now!
HUGZ
its hard and this happens! JUSt remember its a low percent that have complications. IF you trust your surgeon, I am sure all will be fine.
GOOD LUCK
and its okay to be nervous we all are going into this.

There's a booklist thread somewhere and many people reccomended that book, so it looks like it should go on the must read list.

i am in the same boat as friend was. walking around at this weight and i am a heart attack waiting to happen. it comes down to this for me, i don't have the surgery and i die before i'm 60, or i have the surgery, (take the risk) and improve my life and health issues, become healthy, like the look of myself in the mirror and get to live and enjoy a (hopefully)long and full life, stop just exsiting and start living again. i would hate to live the rest of my life as i have been for so many years because of my weight. i had blinders on, but now that i'm preparing for the surgery i see so many things that i used to do that helped cause the weight gain and finally realized that at this weight i am not happy. yes there is a risk but the life i will be able to live after the surgery is worth it. and i don't want to live this way at this weight anymore.

Yes, I agree with you. Looking at it from my perspective, it's something I must do. It's very hard for family members (who don't have a huge weight problem) to understand. I have only told one friend and she is skinny and works out every day, to boot. She doesn't really understand, either. Not sure if I would ever be able to get everyone's blessing on my decision, so I just have to do what's right for me.

Wannabe I was right where you are a few weeks ago and today I am 2 weeks out. I will be honest and tell you it is definitely not easy and very scary even after you do it but you know what is right for you deep down inside. I am here and alive and one of the hardest things is keeping hydrated but being a nurse I am sure you will be fine with that! Have faith in yourself and you surgeon and realize that no matter what you would be very wierd/strange if you weren't nervous. Your sister and family love you and I am finding out now that I think this was harder on my family than maybe even myself. THat doesn't mean I shouldn't have done it and I am glad I have! It is hard but definitely seeing the results is making it worth it.
I am here for you!

OT, but what cabbie says reminds me of when my kids were in school. It was soooo much easier to study myself, than to watch them study and make good. |

Thanks you guys, everyone gives very sound advice. I think WLS is just not a very common surgery (but getting more common)-- alot of the worry for patients and their families is the fear of the unknown. It will be interesting to see if there is still the "taboo" with WLS 10-15 years from now. I heard where only 1% of those who would qualify for surgery are having it done. That percentage may rise as it becomes more acceptable.
