Question My doctor appointment

I went to the Bariatric surgeon's office today. I saw the P.A. cause the surgeon is doing something for the military. They of course weighed me and all the normal nonsense....I definately partied with the food cause I gained 5lbs over my weekend hiatis. They took the blood work all over again cause I haven't been monitoring my diabetes or taking cholesterol meds since I had no health insurance. She asked if I exercised and portion control...I told her I could probably run laps around her that's how much exercise I do. Then she asked the stupidest question," Then why haven't you lost any weight during this time period away from us?" DUH that is why I need surgery!!! Then I went to my primary cause my feet are swollen to the size of oranges. She said fluid was pooling and I have to wear teds stockings. Then the weight issue came up. She has been trying to help me for the better half of 7 years...I told her I really think I have decided on the Bariatric surgery. She asked if I realized what a drastic life change it was and I said yes I did realize it but I didn't want to end up dead because of my weight. She gave me Symlin which is a med that forces the body to utilize the sugar from your meal instead of storing it. She also wants me to go to Weight Watchers AGAIN. I want to scream....I don't know what to do. I don't start the Medifast for another month or more cause I have to wait to see the surgeon even though I already started the process. What to do ?!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

WOW, I am sorry that you are going through this. But like you said, you are considering the WLS because it is what YOU need, not someone else. I feel for you, I really do...I have the best PCP ever and as soon as I mentioned the words WLS to him, he was overjoyed! He thought that it was the best decision that I could make for ME. Your time to shine is coming, just hold on to that!

I am sorry you have to go through this. My PCP was hesitant when I mentioned WLS. I explained my reasons along with all the diets I had been on over 20 years. Then I mentioned my Sister had WLS and how wonderful she is doing (that seemed to help).

Somtimes your Family Dr wont be on board with you when choosing WLS. I have seen many post about it. Its up to you but you have worked this hard to get to the point to have the surgery. Dont give up on that option now.

If you ask any of us here we will tell you complications and all we would all do this again in a heartbeat. It makes that much of a change in your health and life. But don't think you will never have to struggle again. That my dear will be with you the rest of your life. We are addicted to foods. My addition is carbs. That will always be with you. But maybe tell your doctor this, would you rather be struggling with your weight and your food addiction while being in bad health. Or would you rather have your weight under control be in better health and have a better chance at controling things than you do now?

I had first mentioned having surgery to my PCP five years before I actually did it. She said if I had asked her two years earlier she would be against it, but after seeing a couple of patients who had the surgery and their health improving she was all for it. She actually made me an appt with a surgeon then but in the mean time I went on Atkins and lost 40 lbs. I cancelled the appt because I thought I had found my magic bullet. Only to go ahead with it 5 years later.

Sorry to be so long winded, but I guess this just touched a cord with me. You have to make up your mind about your health. Your doctor may be leary about it because they do not know anyone who had this surgery. If you let them know that you have done all the research and know what you are going into they may change their mind. If they don't, then you can be the patient who is the success and changes their mind for them.

When I first talked to my surgeon and he started explaining things he told me by the questions I asked he could tell I had not made this decision over night. He said they were finding more and more with the internet that the patients were much more educated about the whole process then they were 10 years ago. He said that he also found many of his patients were like me and had thought long and hard before coming to the final decision to go ahead. He was very pleased with this because the patient was going into it with their "eyes open."

(((((HUGS))))) You may need to take plenty of time to talk with your primary. She may need to know how much you have researched about surgery and that you truly understand all the pros and cons. Sometimes, just like families, drs are just afraid for you because they haven had much first hand experience with WLS patients.
Keep at it, and try to educate your primary as much as you can.

So Interesting, My Pcp Which I Only Had For About 2 Months & Of Course I Had Been Dieting, Suggested Wls To Me... Truly Explain To Her That You Completely Understand About The Surgery & You Know The Ppro's Honestly Outway The Cons... Especially With Dm. This Surgery Could Very Simply "cure" You From That..

My Dear Friend, If I Were You, I'd Go With South Beach/ Atkins Diet Cause That Is The Way We Are Basically Currently Eating After Wls!!!!

Get Pushy!!
Don't Give Up, If You Want You Can Use Me As An Example... I Would Come To An Appointment With You As Support..

Call Me When You Can!!!
Lol,
