Believe me.....I told noone except my DH and 3 kids. The night b4 my op I gathered my immediate family and told them what I was doing in the morning and that I was well prepared and all was set. Maybe it was not the right idea but it was for me. I wanted to do this on my own and I did. Noone could say anything they were to stunned and that only gave them a few hours to digest it. As for doing it to br thin, I dont believe short of movie stars and the real rich.......does any surg. do this surg. for vanity, all the docs I researched do it for healthy reasons and you had to really qualify. Alot of people just need something to complain about or something to look down on you at. You do what you have to do for yourself, You are what matters.
I have had the same problem. Im 5'3 and 237 with comorbids. I have only told of a few of my friends who are looking out for me at the hospital (Im a nurse at this hospital). I think Im just going to say "my doctor suggested it" or "thank you for your concern", this was a "complicated decision". Or not answer at all for now.
I think people who react like this have not researched our journey or lived many days in our shoes. Im just going to let people own their own emotions (I love my therapist for that!)
My father was not supportive of me having surgery at all. He would repeat himself over and over about how you don't need surgery to lose weight. It didn't matter that he himself had lost and gained many times. It didn't matter to him that he couldn't keep it off either. I had the surgery for me and no one else. I've heard some pretty negative comments, but I feel the best I have felt in more than a decade. Don't let others discourage you. If you decide you want to have WLS then go for it. BUT...make sure you are doing it for you not anyone else.
I agree with jealousy for sure. My mom hasnt been that supportive. I think shes nervous, ofcourse, but why so much anxiety when I have had 4 or so other surgeries in the last ten years..you know what I mean . Shes been asking me "are you sure you cant lose this on your own?". Oh well, my mind is made up, I havent taken care of me in decades really, and its time for me to work on me! Finally!
