| Friends upset about surgery
The other day I went to a get together at a friends house and the one person I have been confiding isn because she has had this surgery was there. She asked me about when I was having my surgery and two other friends overheard. WELL.... that started a huge ordeal. These other two friends started in on me telling me how unsafe the surgery is and that I am not over weight enough to have the surgery, saying my doctor must be a quack to even consider surgery and so on. I am 236 lbs on a 5'2" frame and my BMI indicates that I am morbidly obese. These people actually think I am just extremely vain and that I only want to be thin that's why I am having surgery. I tried to explain that I have sleep apnea, I am pre diabetic and so on but the one friend who is an RN stated that anyone over weight has those issues. I just could not believe how they hounded me about this. I now that this is the exact reason why I have never told anyone except the one person I now that has had the surgery and my family. Has anyone else experienced something like this and how did you deal with it.

there are always people who have their opinions about wls surgery...ultimatly it is not their decision and not their body..if they cannot be supportive of your decision then bluntly they are not true friends...good luck!!

Stories, stories & more stories!
You can choose to listen, filter out & go through with the decision you feel is right for you, or listen to these stories, let them take a toll on your mind & confuse you..
Be armed with knowledge if you plan on telling people before surgery, so you have your amno prepared!
Good luck, we all had to deal with this at one time or another...
Hang in there & keep those supportive people surrounding you,.
Lol,

Like everyone else has stated "this is your desicion to make" and no one elses. I didn't have much support from friends or family but I knew I did not want to live with the fat or all of the side effects anymore. Against everyones wishes I had surgery. Yes, I was scared but would do it again. The surgeon's are more practiced now and the stats are way better than say 20 years ago. Look at how many people alone are on this forum that have been successful.
Good luck with this.

There are always going to be some people who have a negative idea about WLS. Ultimately it is your choice. You must arm yourself with knowledge and research any and all info. about the surgery you choose to have. People have insecurities about themselves and then there are the people who make them feel better about themselves because they are heavier than they are or what not......If your "friends" are not going to be supportive of your decision then it is better not to mention that subject or get rid of the negativity surrounding you. I had friends that never mentioned how they felt when I told them I was having WLS. They respected my decision. Only and ONLY after I decided not to go through with it did they say they were glad I didn't. Knowledge is power my dear and ONLY YOU can decide what is right for you. BTW, did you tell your RN friend that you having sleep apnea was just as dangerous as any surgery?

Yes I didnt tell many people about my decision. Very few. I had already made up my mind and I was going thru with it and I know there were alot of people out there who dont feel strongly about it and etc....After the fact I didnt care who knew casue it was done and over with.
If you feel right about this and so does your surgeon than I say go for it.
Where and who is your surgeon? I see your from upstate NY. I had mine done at Highland with Dr. Omalley.

I was truely blessed that I had all the support of my family and friends. Not a single person that I know of had a negative reaction. I was open and told everyone...even my guy at the tanning salon! LOL
Sorry you had to hear the negativity. They could either really mean well and care and are worried or are mis-informed and are only making assumptions.
No one knows best but YOU and your doctors.

Sigh. Friends...can't live with 'em...can't shoot 'em.
I remember a co-worker who, when noticing me being riled about something, would say, "Hey. You mad or you jealous?"
I wonder what your friends would say. Here you are, taking charge of your life for maybe the first time in your life, and they are giving you grief. You may have to give them some breathing room at this point.
Hang in there.
