| Hey Mom! How are you? I'm good. Oh, before I forget, I am going to have WLS!
Yeah well it didn't really go like that. I tend to ramble so bare with me. I called my mom tonight to share that I am on the pathway towards getting wls. She has seen my ups and downs and her reaction was pretty much what I expected. She said nothing for what seemed like minutes. Back in high school I lost a lot of weight and she saw me use good nutrition and exercise to do it. However, it became a horrible obsession and it led to starvation and over exercising. Once I started to eat again I over endulged and would then not eat to compensate, and my metabolism was so screwed up. I got married and comfortable and the weight just piled on with all the stress of work, and my husband being deployed, and not being near family. Then I got pregnant and was already 240lbs. Bottom line admist all this is my mom knows that I have tried everything to lose weight. I told her I don't remember the last time I felt full. That is one thing that kills me. Hopefully that helped her understand a little. I dunno. She also said God didn't intend us to have things like this done to our bodies, and what about down the road, and having kids. I gave her my answers and that I feel at this point I needed this as a tool to keep me accountable to myself but she sounded still hesitant. She's big into natural products and not big on prescription meds and all that. ANYWAYS...I am just bummed out. I want her and my fathers support, being that I don't want to share with a lot of people. I am thankful to God to have my husbands support so that is the most important to me. And to all of you who are supportive as well an amazing examples of sucess stories, thank you!

I am glad you are here for additional support. It is just hard for people to understand sometimes if they have not been in the same position.

A mother's job is to protect her child. You are telling her that you are going to have a dangerous surgery that you could die from, and if you don't, you will be permanently altered in such a way that you won't ever be able to eat "normal" again. In addition, you may have malabsorption issues for the rest of your life.
Her gut reaction is to try to stop you to protect you. She's probably not going to be supportive until after you've gone through the surgery and come out OK and she can see the positive side of this. Be patient with her, she loves you.

She'll come around. I didn't tell my mother for 6 months after I had the surgery because I knew she would do what she is doing now. Everytime I talk to her she says, "And how is your diet going?" I cannot ever remember a phone coversation with her when she hasn't said that. And the tone is, "I know you are going to fail, I am just waiting to catch you." I used to be able to turn it around on her but now she says her doctor doesn't want her to lose any weight. I guess 200 plus on a 5' even frame is normal for him.
Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your thread, but beleive me I feel your pain!

Ah....mothers....
Mine did the same - 'can't you just diet???'
She may come around after - but the bottom line really is what is good for you? And there is a lot to be said for quality of life. Hugs to you - a mothers reaction has the potential to cripple us emotionally. Give her a hug, tell her how you feel, that you appreciate her concern, and really just need her support at this time.

I'm glad you are getting support here. Your mom will come around when she starts to see all the wonderful positive changes in your life. It will take time. You have to do what is right for you. That's the most important thing.

I had the same problem. My parents said "why can't you just go back to weight watchers again you have always lost there in the past" or Why don't you just try eating what the people on the gastic bypass diet eat then you won't need the surgery. My father went as far as to say he would by me a very expensive tread mill and a years worth of fruit if I would call off the surgery. I finally shut him up by saying "Dad say I decide not to have the surgery and go to weight watchers again do good for a while, but later gain it back like I always do plus some and a few years later die of some diesase accoiated with being obese. Dont you think you guys would wonder if I had the surgery then I might have lived longer." After that statement he never voiced another opinion. And my mom was secretly wanting to to have it but she couldn't say so cause dad would be upset with her. Now that I have had the surgery even though I have had some complications they both love me and take care of me as much as before. But the decison to have the surgery should be yours and yours alone.
