Hi my name is Eric , i am posting on behalf of my mother.any kind of help will be eternally grateful. I am concerned for my mother's health. she had the gastoric bypass surgery in late October while in surgery they hit a bleeder(some kind of vein or something not too sure) anyway they had to give her 2 units of blood and she stayed 5-6 days in the hospital after the surgery. When she got home she wasnt able to eat tried but couldnt normal vomitting and nausea associated with the sugery. well, she was trying to eat but couldnt not even the appetite to eat. she ended up getting dehydrated so back into the hospital she had fluids and the Dr. gave her a potassium drip all night (i believe all night) and then she was out of the hospital a day and half later . she felt good but no appetite couldn't hold down any kind of food but was able to hold down fluids.well, she hasnt even been able to eat the small proportions that patients that have the surgery are able to eat, she still feels nauseated and get sick when she eats its been 2 months shouldn't she be better by now? she went in for a Dr apt last week and the Dr. put a scope down her throat said he didnt see anything but opened the opening in her stomach a little more. well, she tries and tries to eat but cant keep anything down she is so sick and for the past two days has been laying in bed she feels so bad, christmas is right around the corner and i hate seeing my ma like this anyone with any suggestions or help me and my family would be grateful, thanks for your time and god bless.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Sorry your mom is having such a tough time, I'm sure it's scary for all of you. I would insist the doctor check your mom again, maybe go for a second opinion to someone else if this one doesn't seem concerned enough. I went through something like this for over a month, couldn't keep food down, just liquids. My surgeon had me go for an endoscopy, found everthing looked alright in the pouch area, but the lower intestine was kinked and twisted. He scheduled me for surgery for 2 weeks later, now it was
a little over a month of throwing up, but then the pain got so bad and I was very weak. My husband called the doctor and he said to bring me immediately to the ER and by that time I was in so much stomach pain, thought I was dying. The pain was so severe. I kept throwing up green bile uncontrolably. I'm not trying to scare you but be sure your mother keeps in touch with her surgeon with this, we know there are complications going into this surgery, so knowing our own bodies we know how much we can take or not. Tell her to trust her instincts--get to the doctors again.
Once my surgeon went back in and straightened things out I was like a new woman.
I hope hers is a minor issue that be taken care of before Christmas. And just want to say, what a great son your mom has, one that loves her alot and worries about her, good for you. I don't know if this helps the situation but know some of us did have complications, and by going to our drs and insisting we get help things worked out fine. I'm betting this will be the case with your mom also, I'll be saying prayers that all goes well sweetie. Please keep us informed and know we will be here for her and you.

From what you've posted, it's best to breath down the neck of your mother's surgeon until she starts feeling better.
Other than blockage of the intestines, temporarly paralysis of the pouch movements can cause nausea, too, so the surgeon should confirm this as well.
Get in touch and stay in touch with the surgeon until this is resolved.

Eric, definitely keep in touch with the surgeon. It's ok to be a pain the butt with them when your mom feels so bad. Be polite but insistant. The way she feels is not right. Please let us know how it goes.

Eric,
There are some basic rules that we all must follow after surgery. Make sure your Mom knows these rules, and if she has been following them and is still unable to eat, then keep after the surgeon to find out what's wrong. But if she isn't follwoing these rules then that could be part of the problem.

1. Eat very small bites of food and chew it to death before swallowing.

2. Eat very slowly and pay attention to the feeling of the pouch, it will signal when you need to stop.

3. Measure your food so you don't try to eat too much.

4. Eat only high protein, low fat, low carb foods. Meats should be very moist, broiled or roasted, NOT FRIED. Probably shouldn't try red meat until about 6 months. Try chicken breast, turkey, lean pork, eggs, beans, fish and seafood. Milk products like yogurt, cottage cheese, 2% cheeses. Later she can add in vegetables and fruit. Again: No FAT food (fried, anything greasy), and no high sugar foods (cookies, cake, candy). THey WILL make her sick.

5. Don't drink fluid for 30 minutes before the meal, during the meal, and for at least 30 minutes after the meal. Set a schedule for when to eat and when to drink and stick to it.

6. Take your vitamins - for ever more.

Best of luck. Let us know how she's doing.

Thanks for the all the support! Since my mother has followed all the rules and guidelines for post-op the surgeon kept saying she had a 'sensitive stomach'(whatever that means) and kept trying different anti-nausea medication. well, my dad went down to the hospital today and personally talked to the Dr. , and she is being admitted @ 08:00 a.m. tomorrow(tues.) the dr. isnt going to release her til something has been figured out. They supposedly scheduled all the tests needed to get to the source of the problem. will keep all you great people informed when i know whats going on , thanks for your support!!

Eric,
I am so glad to hear that the doctor is finally going to help her. I have thought about your family a lot since your post yesterday. My heart goes out to you. I know how bad your mother must feel not only physcially but mentally also. I had my surgery on 11/10/08 and have been in the hospital 3 more times since the surgery. And believe me the metal stress of not knowing what is wrong is just as bad as physical pain. I think it is a really great thing that you have found this site to visit and ask questions on your mothers behalf. PLEASE keep us updated on your mother.
