Heck of a lot of brain work, and why we all say, the surgeons can take credit for only 10% of the work, the remaining 90% is up to the patient himself.
The farther out I get, the more I appreciate the truth of this. I've lost all the weight I need to lose, but I still have to eat. If I really try, as some do, I can force more food down than I should, thus stretching my pouch out of shape. If I don't change the way I relate to food (as opposed to merely changing the way I eat), I will gain weight back. There are many on this list who have discovered this for themselves.

The surgery is only an event. It is not a habit, or a lifestyle, or a diet. It is only a one-time event. It causes weight loss, but you can recover from that if you push it.

The true success is dependent on what you do after the event, for the rest of your life. If you can't commit to that, you're better off not having the surgery, because it won't help you change your life and live happily ever after.

If you can attack this on the mental level and change your behaviors in relation to foods, this is a very sustainable way of life. If you approach it like another diet, you'll get the results you got on all the other diets, but your frustration level may be higher because you have more invested in this one.

It's hard to make it work. But if you make a true change in your relation to food, it gets easier as you go along. You can never let your guard down, though.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I think I just had a "Wow" moment. I think down deep I know all of this, but I think reading what you both just wrote and being at the point post op where I'm not losing and I'm eating more (sometimes pushing past full) it really registers.

I've just gotten to the point lately where my head hunger makes me want to eat and eat. Plus the stress from school is lingering over my head and the first thing I want to do or think about is eating.

You both just motivated me to get beyond this. I know I can do this. I will finish losing this weight. I will be a success story!

It takes a success attitude to be a success story. It also takes success actions.

The fact that you are an adult, returning to school and doing well, shows what you are capable of. I have found that my adult students who come back to work on a degree are the most goal-oriented, disciplined students there are. As a non-traditional student, you live the success story, so doing well at WLS is just a matter of making it one of your priorities and it will happen.

BTW - I know what I'm talking about with returning students. I've graduated in the '60s, '70s, '80s and twice in the '90s. I was never a professional student (one who stays in school to avoid facing the real world outside), but I spent plenty of time going back to school between phases of my career. My mother got motivated by my success, and was 67 when she got her associate degree the year before I got my PhD! (Then she started her own business and did very well with it!!)

This is probably old now, but my DH is exactly the same way. I jsut had RNY and he is still so angry. I know he has insecurity issues, and he is probably just scared that I will leave him for someone else, or something stupid like that. I am thankful to know that I am not alone in this DH fight. Thanks.

Take him to the seminars that your doctor has and let him ask questions. I have not had my surgery yet but I can tell you my DH is a little scared for me (he told his friend) but has been supportive because I'm determined to make this work.

It might help if he knew ahead of time just what you are going to go through and you will need his support when you get home.

Hope this helps.

Kristen...
Hubby & I went to a few counseling sessions and he is seeing that this really isn't "easy" as he watches me struggle with how much and what to eat and to get my exercise and protein in. He's coming around. That IS exactly what happened with his 1st wife. She lost a ton of weight and started chasing around...... I understand why this might threaten him. He needs to realize I am NOT that kind of a person. I have to desire to run around, I love that guy, as much as he annoys me at times.
Be patient and take care of yourself first!
Hugs
