....hopefully this isn't considered inappropriate, it is meant in jest.

I have a co-worker who always says "FAMILY!...... the other "F" word!"

Sometimes family can be the most frustrating thing, but, we are stuck with them, they are family. They are asking because they care about you, but simply don't understand. I like the suggestions from the other posters.

You are doing great, don't let them get you down.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Im getting this already. Whats your goal weight? Oh thats too low! My Mom spent the weekend mad at me because I am following my doctors orders eating my plan and exercising. I was completely frustrated with her and then she goes on to say "Oh all the people I know regained all the weight plus some" after bypass. Im like why would you say that in the same breath? She didnt have any reason and got defensive. Im with Doc S..I need to tell people to knock it off and yes many of my "people pleasing" skills work against me and cause that eating pattern. I will succeed!

I found it hysterical when I was still >230 lbs and people were already saying that I looked too skinny.

Last week one of our GYN nurse pratitioners said, "you need to stop losing. You don't want to lose too much, because you will lose bone mass."

Point taken. Bless them all! I also told her that I am still under an MD's care and I appreciated her input.

And regarding family...ya can't live with 'em, and you can't shoot 'em! I am a little sorry my mom couldn't see me now (as she is dead) but OTOH she would be constantly on me to take my vitamins...when was your last MD appt...how much more can you POSSIBLY lose, etc. (the answer...I can POSSIBLY lose 38 more pounds, but I will stop on purpose in about 8 lbs.) My dad, who lives 8 miles away, says NOTHING about my weight loss, except to say, "I'm proud of ya, kid," which includes my mad-mommy-skills as well as the weight loss.

Oh, so your your mother has an extensive database of WLS patients on her Christmas card list? She's doing extensive follow-ups of all of them? How many does she know, anyway? (Of all the people she knows, how many may have had WLS but are keeping a low profile about it to avoid this exact thing?) Of that tiny sample of those she knows (yeah, I know, I'm assuming, aren't I?) how many have been diligent about following the rules for life? Of those, how many have experienced regain? Of those who haven't followed the rules, how many had the extensive pre-op training that is now mandatory per our surgeons?

I have seen the statistics in my surgeon's patient database of his 2700 operations. On the whole, folks have done pretty well. I know these are only facts, and facts aren't much good in an argument based on illogic and emotion, but it's all we have on our side. That, and our wonderful health and energy levels, which are guaranteed to drive those who choose not to take control of their lives absolutely wild!!

The only thing you can do with her, considering that she is your mother, after all, is to follow your doctor's orders and live healthy. Maybe sometime in the future there'll be a moment of candor in which she admits, like jj's dad, that she is proud of you. It'll never happen if you let it become a running battle, though. Love her. You'll miss her someday and wish you could hear her lovingly nag you about anything, even this.

I have a friend who had the surgery and hardly told anyone at the time. She is 4 years out now and most people still don't know. When she was asked about how she was losing the weight, she would just smile sweetly and say..."I finally decided it was time to follow my Dr's orders...eat less and exercise more! My doc knows what is best for me."
Yes, my mom was the QUEEN of guilt and nagging, and yes, I DO miss her, she passed on 11 years ago.
Hang in there.

Have you ever thought that trying to be nice to everyone the way you are trying now, is/was one of the stressors in the past that made you turn to food? If that's the case, then you know you'll have to cut that kind of *talkin' to ya* out of your life for once and for all.

I LOVE IT!!! Great advice! I so much agree!! that's my $0.02 as well...lol!
I mean come on..who cares about their opinions. I hate when people act as if they are concerned to only say something to try to bring you down. They know what they are doing. There are haters in the family too that don't want to see you happy or looking good. Don't let anyone steal your joy!

Welcome to the club hon!!! the club of everyone thinking they can say whatever stuff they want to, to you..

This is where you are going to HAVE to start standing up for yourself and just say"

Thank you for your concern, my doctor is very happy with my results and continued success AND -I- am very happy with it too!!"

and if they keep on with it..."you keep repeating..thank you for your concern...etc.."

It's always interesting if you develop a "rote" answer and just KEEP Repeating it over and over they DO get the message and stop.

Do NOT let it sink into your brain and make you start doubting yourself or your body OR start believing that nonsense!!!!

Now, that sounds like people I know. I've got people saying they are coming to my closet to go shopping. I'll give you want I don't want to have taken up, but you won't be coming in my closet!! I've come to the conclusion that people just don't listen to what they say and how they sound sometimes. They mean well........but we get tired of hearing the same things....over and over and over and over......

Girl Girl Girl.....hang in there, and people love to make comments. I agree with Perfesser....I would tell them you are being medically supervised and your doctors are very pleased with your progress and your body will level off on it's own. Continue like you are doing and you'll be fine. Smile and enjoy it!!!
