Soooo, I told ONE person IRL and I haven't heard BOO from her about the weight even when I put myself out there and ASKED her opinion after she didn't comment for over a week after having told her. I think I have already mentioned that when this process started in June of this year my closest friend told me she flat out would not underline exclamation mark support me if I made this decision.

I have told my Mom b/c I would hate to have such a major surgery and not include her, kwim? She's my Mom. However, I've asked her to keep it from my family (of whom ALL are super obese) more so b/c of the surprise element (my Mom opened her yap and announced my pregnancy before I got to do it and ya, I'll cop to a little bit of bitterness! LOL).

Okay- get ready, I will ashamedly admit that I have been one of the naysayers in the past. :::hanging my head in shame:::: For a variety of reasons that appeared valid to me at the time I really criticized those that had the surgery. Now I'm such a major supporter of the surgery, but I'm not willing to come out of the closet.

ALSO my MIL (who sounds a whole lot like Janae's MIL) rags on me to my DH all the time about my weight and had suggested to him in September that I have the surgery. My first response was WTH it's not any of her business and I got all pissy and uppity about it (even while I was in the process...looney tunes over here...). So with my MIL I just don't want to give her that satisfaction YET.

BAH I'm all over the place. Hey believe it or not I'm not surrounding by a strong network of friends IRL so most of the folks I'm talking about are people that I've known since I was PG (spring '00) with my DD. There are two girls over on my board that have had the surgery and I had been snarky about it. Ooooh crow is quite nasty tasting.

I applaud you if you made it through that maudlin mess of a missive. Just venting? I dunno.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

SOUNDS like you have everything well thought thru on who needs to know and who doesnt!!! JUST follow your gut on these issues.

I didnt tell many people at all. I told those that i had to. BUT now that i have had the surgery, and i am down 143 pounds and people are amazed at how well I look I TELL them exactly how i did it!!!!

YOUR surgery date is creeping up fast! AND just want to send you my best wishes for a uncomplicated, text book perfect surgery.

I did the same as you--told my Mom, but not my other family. Right before the surgery I did tell my only sister and she came to the hosp. for my surgery and sat with my husband. She also came and stayed overnight twice when I had complications so my hubbie would get a little sleep. I did tell my very best friend and she was supportive, even though she is heavy and I don't think she would personally have the surgery. I'm glad I told the people closest to me so I could have some emotional support at the hospital. Like Lisa, I told no one else before the surgery. Now that I have lost a bunch of weight I am glad to tell people about my 'miracle'! I wish my brothers would consider the surgery. It has improved my life and health beyond belief! I hope it does the same for you!

T, whatever you tell, to whomever you tell, and when, is your choice. You'll need to sort things out so you'll be able to get the best of support from those who will be close to you.
As for your *past*, hm.....Honesty probably is the best policy. Your sincere attitude towards your friends who've had WLS is what will probably work best, and let you be friends with them again, enable you to receive support from them, and give them support now that you can give it.
I'll be honest, when I first heard of the surgery from a fellow colleague, a lap surgeon, I was rather skeptical about it all. It was getting to know CraigT, who hosts this board, that changed my opinion. I once read an article where one of the leading bariatric surgeons at Stanford U was once very much against this surgery, and used to say, any dr who would do this should have his/her medical liscense revoked. So, even the best have been there, done that.
You aren't the only one.

Butterfly, you made me laugh and laugh and laugh some more. I opted to only tell my two siblings, my hubby and my kids, and my immediate supervisor. That's it. I decided if I wanted to tell others sometime down the road, I could do that. But, once the cat is out of the bag, news spreads like wildfire, so I haven't told anyone else 4 months later. I'm very happy with just this small circle of people knowing. When people comment on the weight loss and how I'm doing it, I say, exercise and high protein. Which is entirely true. I feel just a wee bit bad sometimes, though, because I might be a good example for someone considering the surgery, and could answer their questions. But-not bad enough to come clean! I used to joke about bariatric surgery and thought it was the LAST thing I would ever do. Time and 500 failed diets have a way of changing your mind, though. I'm feeling great now. Take care!
