How did everyone explain the time away from work when people didn't know? I have a couple of co-workers that know and my manager, but I don't think I want the whole department knowing but I know that people will ask questions. afterwards, I just plan on continuing with the working with a nutritionist and a personal trainer to explain the weight loss which will be true, once I get back to the gym after surgery I will be working with a personal trainer and the nutritionist/dietician though the pre and post op periods.

I told everyone in my life EXCEpT work. They are not a safe bunch to share with. I have lost 60lbs and no one has said anything about my weight. I do wear jackets/blazers which cover up a lot of issues. Eventually My weight loss will be unable to be hidden and when that day comes I will deal with it like the perfessor.

Melinda,
I scheduled my surgery during the Christmas break. That gave me almost 2 weeks at home before I went back to work, and when I started again, I told them that I had an unplanned surgery to remove my gall bladder. (Well, I didn't know anything about the gall bladder surgery until 20 minutes before they wheeled me to the OR, so I hadn't planned that part of it, had I? ) That explained why I was so wiped out and only doing half-days for the first week of the semester.
Ya gotta always tell the truth, 'cause they'll remember and slap you upside the face with any lies you give 'em. But you are under no obligation to tell them the whole truth. Know when to tell 'em that you're not comfortable talking about it.

I shared it with anyone who asked cause I felt so proud and happy and not knowing it might help someone else who might be scared to get the surgery! So I feel being honest and sharing the decision you made is a good thing!

Well, I did tell my work because although I had saved up vacation days it would be great to be able to have a sick leave (and I did!). But I went directly to HR and explained the situation, I said I didn't want to get the risk of being judged to have chosen the surgery as a way to get healthy. They took it really well and said they had to talk to my boss and I said it was okay and they were also telling my boss I did not want to talk about it. A few weeks before the surgery my boss advised to tell my team (2 other guys at that time, now we are 5 in total) that I was having surgery and not vacation (the rest of the company would think I was just on vacation). So I did, I just mentioned I was having abdominal surgery to prevent future problems (which is true) and they never asked anything to me (which I'm very grateful).
In November I already knew I was having the surgery in January so I started spreading the word on coffee breaks that I was on a diet. I named my diet yo-sha-su (yogurt, protein shake, soup) - it was actually my liquid diet that I did two weeks prior to the surgery. Point is, in December-January a lot of people will take a few weeks vacation and since I quit smoking for the surgery I wasn't out in breaks - it was too cold to just go out without a reason - so I can say a lot people didn't see me that often. When it came to a point that people noticed I was losing weight I would mention the diet I started in November and it was going well and so on. They'd be very supportive on how well I was sticking to the diet! And after some time people get used to it and don't ask anything anymore.
Hope you can take something useful to you from my experience. Good luck with your surgery!

It's YOUR choice to tell who you want.....
However, that being said, I wasn't going to tell co-workers, but I work in a cube environment and it was impossible for them NOT to overhear conversations when I was making Dr appts, taking days off, etc. So, I told a few of my "close" co-workers. Needless to say, pretty much everyone knows. I'm okay with that now and have become comfortable with it, but at the beginning it was awkward. I stick to the story about I am on a Dr monitored weight loss program and under Dr's orders to lose as I need to get the weight off my arthritic joints and reduce my blood sugar when I encounter folks that I don't feel like discussing it with.
What REALLY annoys me is when people will ask how much I used to weigh and how much I weigh now. None of their DARN business! I just smile and say, that's something I only discuss with my Dr. Why did you need to know? And keep smiling when they squirm.....and say...uh, uh. uh...
It's all an process and you will become more comfortable with things as you progress.
Just take of YOU! And only tell folks what YOU want to tell them. There are alot of responses you can give - doesn't mean you are lying to them!

Yep the only people I told were my husband of course, then my best friend who had had her WLS 11 months prior. She was my inspiration. I eventually told my mother once I got pretty far into the process, then when I got my surgery date I let her tell my Dad. Yah, I totally knew he would be a negative nelly about it and I did not want to hear it. And even now 4 months later, he still says he would have tried to talk me out of it. It just really bums him out when they are all sitting around eating and I am not. I reassure him, I am ok. I just drank and I have to wait to eat, or whatever the case may be. Anyway, it is your choice. Now, once the weight dramatically starts to fall off, you will have to tell them something. I have been known to say " I am under a very closely medically supervised diet" and things like that. Good luck. It is an awesome journey.

I didn't tell anyone at work and I am happy with my decision.
