Default Oh Mother!

Okay so i haven't had surgery yet but i am working on getting everything going. I thought everyone was behind me with my desicion and i guess not. My mom and little sis gave me a shocking reply to when we were talking about hoodies. See my mom had the WLS and she is doing well. She commented on how her hoodies didn't fit her anymore and she needed to get a new one. My sis and i were both agreeing that we too needed new hoodies. But i was like " But i am going to wait till after my WLS to get a new hoodie." My mom was like " Well after you see the dietcian and if they put you on meds to help you lose those lbs you need to lose for surgery you might not even need surgery." My little sis agreed with her. I was like WAT?!?!?!?! I am already nervous and i was glad that my mom was behind me with my choice to have surgery done but this like statement has me worried. I am going to do the surgery no matter what her opinion is because i want a healthier me and nothing has worked yet. But it would be comforting to have her behind me.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Maybe she just wants to make sure her baby's considered everything before having her guts tied in knots? She could be testing the depth of your commitment. If she's had it and done well, she knows what it can do for you. She also knows how hard it really is!!

Let it ride. Life's wayyy too short to be mad at your mom, especially on Mother's Day!!

I agree with CT on this one. My mom is one of my biggest supporters now, but she gave me a hard time before the surgery. Part of it was testing my resolve, and I think part of it was just her being afraid for me. This surgery is a BIG step. Permanent and life changing.... moms get nervous when that kind of commitment is at hand. Heck, I get nervous when my daughter wants to go from blonde to a redhead! It's just what moms do.

Just stand your ground if this is what you want. Be prepared to defend your decision, from lots of people. It's happened to me many times. As much as I love my grandmother, and as proud as she is of my success...she still tries to give me the "horror stories" that she's heard. It's just all part of the process.

Just tell your mom you love her, and if you were to miraculously lose all the weight you want before surgery time, then so be it. Otherwise, you're surgery bound! LOL

Best of luck to you.

Umm...what MEDS are she referring to that "they'll give you to help you lose weight before surgery"??? there is NOT one Bariatric program that I know of that give you medication to 'lose weight before surgery'...that caught my eye and bugged me, and made me really uncomfortable to read.

Srry should have been more clear. I think she was refering to the meds that the docs will give you if you having trouble losing that last bit of weight. I believe they gave her phentermine (sp?) after she kinda stalled out with those last 10 lbs i believe. I will double check it to make sure i got the correct information.

Aside from medication, siince your mother is doing well, she knows it can be a pretty rough road, so she may want to make sure you are mentally ready.
Don't just say you are going to have surgery to her, discuss WITH her about everything concerning surgery--what the drs and nuts and other people she had to see for approval said to her, how she what her emotios were going through the process, when she was approved to pre op, what her emotions were immediately post op, what she feels about herself now. Just bug her with ALL the questions that you come up with. You don't always know what the other person actually is going through even if you live together and arre observing that peson closely, so don't think that you automaically know because you are watching your mother.
Keep in mind that the post op journey is only 10% physical=surgery and 80% mental/emotional.
If you talk things out thoroughly with your mother, she will understand how serious you are about this, and will help you get the help you need.
Good luck.

I thought one or both of the "phen's" were 1) considered temporary (as is "alli" etc) and/or2) dangerous for cardiac side effects? I would not take it/them.

I think your mom is only seeing the little girl in you and may not think you have the capacity to make the decision or to pull this off. This is all your decision, as you know, and you will do what you and your medical team decide what is best for your health. Mom can only consult.

This is why I did not tell my dad about my decision until 2 weeks before the surgery. We are very close and it was real tough, but it was best for all in the end.

And re: the last 10 lbs...heck, I stalled at week 3! And the last 10 lbs for me was a lot of work! And it is a lot of work to keep it off.

My two cents...your mileage may vary.
