| Drastic measures?
So I have been approved which many of you know and I am so excited! But now I am facing the struggles with my parents about how I am taking such DRASTIC measures. My mom just said a little bit ago, I'll love you but I just wish you weren't taking such drastic measures. How do you deal with comments like this? I know they are supportive with me losing weight but they are just scared I guess. What do I say to them to make them feel better about surgery?
Thanks in advance!

Well, I did not tell anybody because I knew those comments were coming. I told my mom after I had a surgery date (and I had only a 2 week warning on that) My dad came with all those comments after the fact and he said "if you had told me about this I would have told you not to do it" and I said "i know, which is exactly why I did not tell you!!" Just show her a BMI chart, and have her do her weight and height on there and see which category she falls in, and what the medical repercussions are. That usually shuts people up when they see what "morbidly obese" means.
Good luck. I am 5 months out, and it has not been all sunshine and roses, but I would do it again in a heartbeat!

I know exactly how you feel!!!! I am in the same situation, so may not be a big help here. I understand your insecurity, and not wanting to tell anyone (after all it is none of their business!), people seem to think we "want" their negative opinions!
All I can say is, embrace this decision, listen to your doctors, get support wherever you can and recognise that there will be some bumps in the road. We WILL make to our destination!

Thanks all for your input and support! I finally sat down and talked with her about it and now she seems to feel a little bit better about it. My mother in law had the surgery 2 years ago and is my biggest cheerleader right now so at least I have her in my corner, without her and all of you, I would be terrified! So thanks again for all your encouragement and support and I will let you all know as the date gets closer how things are going!

| This is what I did
I sat my entire family down at the table and said "I have something to say...please if you do not agree with my decision do not say anything. I have made a decision for myself that will improve my life. I have decided to get WLS." "I have made up my mind so please I do not want to hear anything negative." My Mother is the olny one that has said anything negative. I have to understand that she is worried about me going under the knife, but she has to understand I don't want to be unhealthy any more. I have to do this! She is better now that we have talked about it a few times. Everyone else was great, very supportive!

Knowledge is power .. my Mom said the same thing. Now she feels it is best decision I have ever made. She is scared, scared of losing you, when she feels that there might be a less drastic way of losing weight. She needs reassurance. Take her with you on your appointments. Tell her you need her there for support. If you surgeon does a monthly seminar, have her go. That way she can ask questions. They can answer her directly.

| Yes include her in everything , seminars, appointments, any education you can get your hands on, she loves you, she worries, as my hubby did, but once I had been told I was allergic to insulin and would die with out it, his head took a big turn and he pushed pushed pushed for it, then I was the scared one...You will do great and be able to enjoy life as we should...hugs, Annie

Normal feelings shes having honey. Its the unknown and your gonna have them to before its over in a way. Not so much like she has. You have more knowledge of this than she does. If you have to seen the surgeon before you have the surgery take your mom with you and that way she can understand a bit more. That is if that is a option. My surgeon seen me buy my self the first time and it was mandatory the second visit whom ever my support person was had to attend the visit with me so when explaining the entire surgery they would understand it to and they had the chance to ask questions and the time was made for it.
Yes the stress it hard on you right now having to hear that from your mom but what dont kill you honey will only make you stronger remember that. She wants you healthy to. And somtimes it takes drastic to make that happen. It is a last resort surgery. We all know that. You should be fine honey. Your date is comming fast and yes time is gonna fly it wont stand still like a vacation comming up does so hold on......
