| My Big Fat Secret
There seem to be a good number of posts about family and friends voicing their "concerns" about WLS to those who've undergone the surgery. I'm curious. Have you all told family and friends about your surgery? Are you fielding questions constantly...or do you feel judgement?
I've told NO one...except my husband (obviously). I don't feel as if my excess weight was anyone's business...and my weight loss is also mine. If anyone has noticed the 50lb loss so far, they haven't said anything. My weight has always fluctuated, so they may assume I'm on ANOTHER diet...or they really don't care. Not sure.
Do you regret telling family and friends? Do you think it's helped to tell people? Curious.

I didn't tell anyone until I was at goal and hadn't dropped dead yet. Following me, Peanut told everyone in the civilized world! It's entirely your choice - until you tell someone. Then it's out of your control.
There were some folks at work who wondered what I was doing, so I told them everything except the surgical detail. Once they heard it was a lot of work, they quickly lost interest. Now very few remember. Which is fine with me.

Prior to the operation I told nobody but my partner and my boss, and just one day before I told my daughter. This was because I didn't want any fuss only to find the operation couldn't go ahead.
Post operative I have told everyone who asked about my weight loss the reason for my success. I have never felt any shame regarding my surgeon's success in my case, so therefore could see no reason for lying about it or being economical with the truth, indeed with all the publicity surrounding WLS anyone who believes that people are not going to work out why one suddenly loses 100 pounds plus in no time when they have been huge for years is kidding themselves
I found being honest with people allowed them to be honest with me. It meant they could support me through this and that I didn't have to compound one lie with another when they saw me eating hardly anything and refusing certain food choices.
Each of us must make our own choice in this matter and I criticise no one for theirs. I chose the truth as the right path for me

Be consistent with who you are--some of us are very private and people like me open as a book!! It is your journey..
our disease is so public it is a struggle--it is hard to manage it privately ......

| I've told every one
I don't know why no one has said anything disparaging. I've told the ladies at the check out when I grocery shop, (I guess I am explaining the food that I am buying) people at school, people in my apartment complex... I went to cost co yesterday and told people in the check out stand. I guess it is easy for me to discuss this kind of thing; what I've learned just from being pre-op, and now post-op can help a lot of people that are having a bad time with their weight.
I am at my son's apartment with all of his friends for Christmas, they all know and they are 20 something; even they know about the wls I just went through. knowing my situations makes it easier to discuss what they are going through with they perceived problems. I tell them that protein comes first.
Many of the people I talk with know someone who has had the surgery as well.

well my husband and I both had GBS and we have chosen not to tell anyone on his side of the family. They are very judgemental and when he mentioned the idea of it last year his mom and grandmother FLIPPED. We didn't want anything to bring us down in our journey. we have told them we have just been dieting. they're buying it so far, lol. As far as telling other people, i am VERY cautious who I tell. I personally dont care what other people think but I think the less they know the better. its none of their business.

I told everyone, if I was able to find a natural way to bring it up in conversation...(oh...sorry, I can't make it next week, I will be in the hospital for surgery, etc.)....I felt good about my decision and didn't care what others thought.... I didn't have even one single person make a negative comment...at least not to my face I think you handlling it whichever way you are most comfortable is the best way to go!
