| Need help with hubby post op
Hi I will be 3 years post op in January but my husband only 3 weeks post op. A lot is coming back to me but he seems to be more into wanting to try things and stretch the boundaries? Yesterday I gave him 2 oz of ham and wanted mustard.? Is that ok? How much at 3 weeks should he be consuming. I remember 6 tiny meals? He keeps begging for crackers or dry toast how far away is that? What about spray butter? Help help

After you get done slapping him upside the head, grab him by the ears, look deep into his eyes and tell him to slow down and follow the rules!! I don't think mustard would be a problem - I was splashing Tabasco on just about everything at that stage. Crackers? Dry toast? He's either not committed yet (too late! ) or he doesn't understand head hunger. Either way, a bunch of dry raspy carbs are not what he needs to meet his goals.

He needs to follow protocol. Mustard virtually has no calories or fat, and the nutritionist in the hospital said is fine to use. I love mustard, so it was one of my first questions. Crackers are considered slider foods, and not wise to consume at this point at all. He's likely just ok'd for soft foods--cream of wheat, eggs, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes (in moderation), soft cheese, etc. Most docs want you to wait a while on meat products. Some newer post ops enjoy SF pudding with unflavored whey isolate added, and you can also add some bended berries or other lower sugar fruits to the pudding. You've been there, and not it's "pay it forward" time. Help his stick to surgical guidelines. It will likely help if you can get him to attend a local support group for post ops. DAVE

Ditto. Ditto.
And, I don't want to cause trouble, but let him be responsible.. (Did he feed you post op?) I am sure he got his paperwork like you did. Suggest he read it and discuss with you what he read, etc. He can make up a meal plan (and he can prepare some of it as well.) He is lucky to have you, but he has to be accountable for himself.

Hey, Pretty Woman.
You gave me some great advice. Now it is time for me to help your husband!
I am 2 weeks post op! This is what I know...1st..protein..2nd...Veggies...3rd..carbs. As with me in soft foods I only get 1oz which is 6 teaspoons there is NO WAY I get into the carb zone yet. I am only into the protein with what little I can consume.
Some of my favorite that might work for your husband if you haven't thought about. 1 t smooth peanut butter (cold) on a teaspoon to lick like a lolly pop
5 t yogurt
5 t refried beans w/ taco seasoning mixed in
1 t cheddar cheese
GNC Power Pak Pudding 1 g sugar 1 g carbs
I am also allowed SF popsicles.
There is plenty of time for a cracker later. This is the optimal time for losing weight. I am taking advantage of it. I bet he will want to as well when he really thinks about it.
Good luck. What a wonderful wife you are!

Your in a pickle. LOL forgive the pun honey. Alot of couples have had surgery together or close together. However in your case your three years apart and lets face it we do forget. One thing I dont forget is the head hunger. And right now he is in the headhunger stage for sure. Honey what ever info they gave him follow it. And you know what its ok to stay I dont remember. Because you dont! LOL I know if it was me I couldnt remember honestly. I know what and how but exactly how much and when no........ I dont. I eat cottage cheese and tuna alot. And just barely bites of that. I know one tuna can had to have lasted me a couple weeks and they are the regular sized ones. Drove my husband insane but I was a month out when that started.
Its gonna be ok honey. Use his packet or call and ask questions. Its ok. You know what your doing to help him but you are allowed to ask questions honey when you dont remember.

You've got good As. He needs to learn to be and to stay accountable. That's the only way to insure success.
Head hunger's a toughie to deal with.

I am with PW, and meat and cracker were a while out for me I still only eat just crackers 4 a meal occasionally. but at his stage I was on pudding and such not even pureed, but what ever meal plan they gave him have him go over it or the whole process will be a disaster. You are such a loving wife and keep up the good work. HUGS.

Hey Motoco,
I think your post was to BJBILL... I am the one who suggests "TOUGH LOVE" when it comes to the new eating plan. She is very supportive; but he does need to handle it on his own.
I have been a #1 enabler to family and friends for a long time and this job I took on, for no special reasons, became so time consuming and "weary-ing." I am working hard to cut down on it...I think it will lessen my anxiety issues. Taking care of me is enough.
Good luck, I hope BJBILL's husband is moving along making good success.
