Getting distracted can be a real big issue for many post ops. Stressors can trigger bad habits--ones that caused you to likely gain a lot of your pre surgery wt. Concentration on eating is a really big issue as an early post op. You need to learn to cut foods into small bites, chew food a lot, and swallow without drinking fluids. Distractions can cause you to get food stuck, eat too much too fast, swallow incorrectly, or return to old habits of drinking a lot of fluids with the meal. Many post ops have to eat by themselves until they get these new habits established. TV, argueing with spouses or kids during mealtime, phone calls during mealtime, etc. are all distractions which will cause you to eat incorrectly. If you've been supporting her financially and she has kids, she'll likely be back in touch with you shortly. Impulse statements can cause a lot of family strife and I hope your days get much better.
