| Hurt by my daughter's comment
Maybe I am being too sensitive, but when we were watching the Biggest Loser on TV last night, I said "It felt awesome to lose 100 pounds" when Antone got there, and she said well, they did it on their own, you kind of cheated. She is 17-years-old, and has been my biggest supporter. We are very close. It really hurt. I have kept my weight off for 2 1/2 years, and am doing well.
Thanks for letting me get it off my chest. I will just let it roll off of my back.

I believe it was Mark Twin who once said that it was a pity that youth was wasted on the young. Once we're over a certain weight, there is no easy way, and any way a person can find that works is not cheating. It would be cheating yourself to not take advantage of every means available to drop that weight and live a happier, healthier life.
But I think I'm preaching to the choir here. If anyone would understand that, I know it'd be you. I've watched your commitment and faithfulness to the rules over the years, and I've seen the joy it's brought to your life (and your family's, too!)
Let it out, sister. We can't change a teenager's attitude, but maybe we can help make it a bit easier to take.

A lot of people are under the impression that WLS is the easy way out when in reality it's not. We have to be even more careful of what we eat, we have to exercise, and not to mention all the pain we have to endure. Do not let her take anything away from you. You have done this on your own. It was your efforts and your struggles. It's not like the surgeon went in cut out all the fat pieces and you walked out of the operating room looking like an instant barbie. No, you had to work at it very hard. So be proud of your achievements. Your daughter along with everyone else who has never experienced obesity will never understand. I'm proud of you and as long as you are proud of your achievements, the comments from the peanut gallery doesn't have much weight to it. So enjoy your rewards.

Wow, I could write a book about daughters' hurtful comments!! Your daughter is only 17, so I will hazard a guess that it's just a lack of life experience, and not enough knowledge about the surgery itself. It's been a different thing for me to handle...my daughters are 29 and 32 respectively. Both work in the medical field, and I still cannot believe their way of thinking about my surgery. At first they waited for me to fail at it. Now that I weigh less than one, and probably the other one, now, they don't want to talk about it. They always ask me what my weight is. They have been doing Weight Watchers and exercising excessively, and it breaks my heart to see them struggle. I see myself in them, and I relive all the struggles with weight that I have endured. I don't want them to go through it, but I realize that until they get their thinking straightened around, they are going to struggle. My oldest lost 54 pounds in 6 months, and now has regained 30 back, because nothing has really changed about her way of thinking about food. They still think I cheated it somehow by having surgery!! As someone pointed, I didn't just have all the fat cut off, and was able to jump into size 2 clothes and run all the way home!!! My husband has been with me right from the beginning, and he knows all I've had to endure, and he knows it hasn't been easy at times. The thing is, my daughters have seen my problems after surgery, but all they focus on is the number I have up on that scale and how it compares to their numbers. I don't even tell them anymore how much I have lost. They still continue with the hurtful comments, but I know a lot of it is due to their frustration.

CS, just tell 'em that when they're ready to get serious about weight loss (instead of just flirting with it), you can give them the name of a really good surgeon! That oughta shut 'em up for awhile!!

Thanks guys! I think it is because I have not had a lot of problems since my surgery that she thinks I cheated. But, I know I did not and that is all that matters.

At that age they just don't understand! I'm sure she didn't even know that she hurt your feelings. My son (at 16) said he would never be fat but now that he is 29 he struggles with his weight. He thought because he was thin and very active his weight would never be a problem. He is in the Army and does PT everyday and runs extra after work and on weekends and still has to work really hard to meet the Army required weight! He now understands!!!!
Hugs to you!!!

Hmmm ... so according to your young "expert", yours or my weight loss experience has less validity than that of someone who suffered post-op complications? Isn't that a bit like telling a soldier that he isn't a "real" veteran because he was never assigned to front-line combat duty? (A young colleague of mine years ago told me that one. )
Aahhh, youth!! Let 'em run the country now while they still know everything!!

| Kids, at any age, do you kiss 'em? or kick 'em? My daughter has been pretty supportive; but when I discuss a future facelift well she doesn't seem too happy. When I first told my husband of WLS he said he wasn't on board... I remember saying "I hope you will change your mind." To date I havent had serious complications-if I had, maybe that would change some opinions. But now, the family compliments me a lot and DH said "The surgery has done well for you." There is no easy way for those of us who have sturggled with obesity. Even with surgery we don't have a "sure cure." We will continually have to work at it. If we forget, the scale will remind us. And, "nix-nay" on the scale and numbers anymore. Don't tell them. Just say you are more comfortable working at your weight loss on your own right now. Let them wonder.
