| My husband's been great
When I first started thinking about WLS, I was worried about how my husband would respond - I didn't know if he would be supportive, angry, jealous - so I put off even discussing it with my doctor for a while.
I finally talked to my doc THEN talked to my hubby.
I have to say, he's been great - he's listened to me after appointments with docs, nutritionist, testing... he does most of the cooking because he's a stay at home dad and he's trying to incorporate the different things I've been learning in his meal prep.
My next appt with the surgeon is Jan 4th. The scheduling of it makes it possible for him to come with me - again, I was hesitant to ask him (and he really hasn't given me any reason to be hesitant, I'm just overly sensitive) if he'd be willing to go with me - I finally did and he said sure!!
he wants to go to a support group meeting with me, but my kids eat sitters for lunch, so I don't see that happening anytime soon.

That's great! I agree with Carol it's so much more helpful when our spouses and loved ones are helpful, I'm blessed that my husband has been so supportive as well as my sons and their wives.

If he's the cook, be sure and point him at the Recipes forum here! Hundreds of great WLS-tested recipes that the whole family can enjoy. Eating healthy is something the whole family can do - just don't tell the kids it's good for them!!
He sounds like a true gem! Better hang onto him. WLS can put a lot of strain on a relationship. Keep those lines of communication wide open and never give him reason to doubt his place at the center of your soul.

he's definitely a keeper. He's also obese - though when we married 15 1/2 years ago, he wasn't - the weight started coming on when he quit smoking in July of 1996. He's been having physical health issues and I pushed him to FINALLY change docs this fall - he's now seeing the same doc I see. She was able to pinpoint the cause of his stomach issues at the first appt he had with her - it's something his previous internist and the gi specialist she sent him to for testing should have caught. His metformin was causing the problems. As soon as she had him stop that med, his problems were resolved - he's on a different med now.
He is also considering WLS, but has been diagnosed with colitis in the past, so it might not be possible - our doc is delving into his medical records to see if he really does have colitis!
he is bipolar and has depressive issues - so that's another thing that will need to be watched very closely if he's able to move forward with this.
I'm sure his physical health and his obesity are impacting his depression, but I think his journey should he be able to have this done will be very different than mine.

My hubby is my biggest support. I can honestly say that I wouldnt have been able to get through my first few weeks post-op without him. We've been together nearly 21 years, and I have never needed him as much as I have needed his support now...and he exceeded my expectations!
Im glad you have your hubbys support, its so essential to your recovery and your well being.

Tricia, the bipolar and depression shouldn't be show-stoppers. I have depression and all they wanted to know was if I was stable on treatment. Same with my wife and her situation.
Obesity is a depressing condition. (I'm sure I don't need to tell anyone here that!) Being consistently defeated in your efforts to conquer fat wears your spirit down. I had pretty much resigned myself to dying fat and young when I found out about WLS. When you defeat that old enemy, your spirit soars and you feel like nothing is impossible for you anymore!
It sounds like he's a good candidate for WLS as long as you get those other issues taken care of. And having you as his coach, guide and support system is about as ideal as it gets. It worked out great for Peanut to have her surgery after I had paved the way for her. You may have read that WLS can put a real strain on a relationship. When both have it, it draws them much closer together with a new shared bond.
Oh, and yes, his journey will be very much different from yours! Guys drop weight much faster than the ladies do, so even though you have a good head start, he still may pass you before you get to goal!
Good luck to you both! Keep us informed as to how it works out!

Cudos to him for being so supportive!! Doesn't it just make it all so much easier to handle when you have someone you love right there in your back pocket cheering you on?
