I, too, have decided to only tell select family and 3 others about my surgery. It is such a personal decision..and.. I admit there is some stigma attached to the surgery by others. I am already losing weight before surgery ( in 3 weeks), so People are already noticing I am losing weight. I am 2 weeks off of work and people think it is for a vacation. I am letting them think that.
Good luck on your weight loss endeavor!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Not me. I told everyone and their cousin. Everyone has been very supportive, or else they have held their tongues. Either way it is working for me. You have to do what works for you.

Nope, it is your surgery, your journey...tell who you want. My husband took off for 3 weeks and they say they "might" have taken out my gallbladder so he told them it was my gallbladder. Turns out my gallbladder was fine. But we just did not correct it. I only told a couple of select friends and family members. I still only tell those who I trust. It is mine to tell and no one elses. Not that I am ashamed of it...by no means. But not everyone needs to know my medical history. I have worked hard for this weightloss...that is all they need to know!

I only told close family members and my husband (of course). I had other issues (cancer polyps in my colon and stomach) so that's why co-workers and my children thought that I was having surgery for. My sister (I have 2) that is overweight was very judgemental about me having WLS and made me feel bad for going through the process. She felt that I wasn't big enough and that I just needed to exercise or diet more (which never worked for me). When people comment about my weight loss and just tell them I made a lifestyle changes to ensure that I'm able to be there for my husband and kids. I'm currently completing my bs so that I can apply to medical school to become a WLS surgeon. If someone where to ask if I did WLS I would be completly honest and share my experience (good and bad). It's your decision, do what's best for you...and by the way, no its not stupid to share you're having weight loss surgery!! Good Luck!!

many ppl in my life know i have had the surgery but many dont...it is amazing when you tell someone you want this surgery or even lap band and they look at you like you have 2 heads or something and then the dumba** comments like "cant you just lose the weight on your own?" or "look at me i lost a lot of weight on my own once you can too"...that comment made me want to say yeah you lost it once and then gained it and more all back.. all of us here know the comments and we dont deserve the flack...all i know is my goal is to be able to actually walk and take care of myself when i am old while those other ppl are still telling their stories of how much weight they lost on their own once...

First of all....it's your business and no one else. You keep that tid bit to yourself. Secondly, it's not the easy way out, you're very brave as well as very determined. Surgery is painful and the life after surgery I hear is a challenge. So don't sell yourself short, you are definitely not taking the easy way out. You are a wonderful person for wanting to be healthy for yourself and your family. No one else on the outside needs to know in what form or fashion you lose your weight, unless they are morbidly obese and you feel in your heart they will benefit from the information....I'm proud of you. Hope all goes well for you. Good luck on your wonderful journey.

WOW! re: your gall bladder. Very fortunate indeed that you decided to have surgery.

You owe no one an explanation or even an update. You've made a decision to take charge of your life and to get healthy. No one should second guess you. You'll have enough to deal with while learning to take care of the new you. Many people will never be able to understand the decision you made. You do what you need to do and get better.

I didn't tell anyone for a month and even then it was just my sisters and mother. My husband is being very supportive and that's all that matters to me. I wouldn't share other intimate health issues; why should I share this just for conversation's sake?

Each day you'll be better in some small or, perhaps, significant way. Treasure your progress when the bumps tend to get you down. In no time you'll be up and feeling great.

I haven't had my surgery yet, but I'm telling people. If they have a problem with it, that's their problem, not mine. I think everyone should do what they're most comfortable with, but for me, I'm super proud of myself for taking this step, and I'm not going to let anybody make me feel an ounce of shame about it. I have several friends who've had the surgery, and if they'd have hidden that fact from me, I wouldn't have been brave enough to start looking into this. Just my 2 cents worth.

It is your choice and your decision. You can choose to tell who you want. I only told a very select few. And even now most people don't know. It is none of their dang business. I have a friend that is very big and is a diabetic and could really use the surgery for her health but has "heard" so many horror stories...you know the kind...the surgeries that didn't work because person did not follow the plan...I think is hurting herself because she won't even consider something that might save or extend her own life. But, not my decision or choice. It is very personal.

This is certainly NOT the easy way out. Surgery. Never having cake or ice cream again. Yeah, I don't call that easy. It is a tool like anything else. It is what you make of it.

Good for you that you choose to make a change in your life. Much success to you!
