Default Negativity from Dad

Does anyone struggle with acceptance of their decision from family members?

I've just started my journey with the required 6 months of documented dieting and exercise. I drive 2 hours one way to Pittsburgh once a month to get weighed and take the required classes for insurance.

My 2nd class is tomorrow and I've made arrangements for my mom to get the kids to bed since DH works nights. While my mom and I were discussing bedtimes, my dad decides to tell me how I should lose weight!?!?

He said its simple -- cut out the fast food and continue with Curves and I'll be fine! Well what do you know -- there is the solution to my obesity! Right in front of my face the whole time. I am absolutely livid, disappointed -- every kind of emotion you can think of -- I'm feeling. I don't feel like I've ever had the support of my dad in any weightloss venture. When I lost 60 lbs several years ago, he just said I'd gain it back. No -- you look great -- keep going. Nothing. He has never had a weight problem and has no idea how much it affects everyday life. However, he thinks its cute that my daughters are 'chubby' while my son is thin as a rail and can eat anything and not gain a pound. I'm hoping my new habits will supercede his anything-goes-for-supper-while-mom-works attitude.

I guess I'm ranting, but I didn't just decide to go through with this surgery willy nilly. I've been overweight my whole life and I have tried every diet under the sun. And now to get negativity from a family member is absolutely heartbreaking.

Sorry for ranting. I had to get that off my chest!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Been there done that. My mom was orignaly all for my surgery when I started my journey and then the closer I got to surgery day she changed her mind and really tried to make me change mine. I think she was nervous for me and scared. But in the end it was my husband and my dad who were my biggest supporters. I went thru with it and things are fine now that sugery is over and all. Im 5 months out. BUt yes Ive been in your shoes.
You just need to do what is right for you and if your ready for this in your life then you have to ignore your dad and do what you want. Hang in there.

I have not even told my dad. he has always been weird about my weight. Years ago i lost alot of weight and he says are you anorexic. It dont matter if im skinny or fat, there is no makeing him happy. I dont have alot of contact with him. So by the time he see's me, he will just think i did it on my own. Dont let them get to you. I know its hard because its family, but you will be fine. Some people are just negative.

Awww ((((((HUGS)))))))
Some people are just judgemental, whether they are family members or not.
Keep your chin up, your head high, and do what you need to do.
Action speaks louder than words, and that is what will win the people you really need in your life over.
May your journey go well.

I know exactly how you feel, it has been the same with me and my dad. He would say things to me about my weight that were suppose to magically help it come right off. I havent told him about the surgery, I am going to show up on his door step next year for a visit and see how it goes. I want to hear him tell me "you are so pretty, you just need to lose the weight". I hope that your dad comes around and realizes that him not supporting you is hurting you more than it is helping you.

YEP my dad thought that surgery
was far to drastic.
BUT i know his problem was he had
only heard of the scary horror
stories and not all the good and happy
people that have had the surgery.
unfortunately he didnt live to see
the success and joy surgery brought me.

I minimized who i told pre op
as i hated hearing the bad
and people trying to convince
me not to do it. I am the type person
once i make my mind up to do something
nothing changes my mind!
JUST do whats best for you...
sure the surgery is dangerous and
has risks but so is walking around
daily life as a morbidly obesite person.
FOR me that out weighed the surgery
risks that i could have had a
heart attack or stroke any moment
at my highest weight!
good luck!

I was like Lisa. Once I made my decison I was set. And like Lisa says, Im way off better than I was walking around before surgery. I was a health risk waiting to errupt. Hang in there. I had the negativity too as I mentioned above but if this
is what you want to do, then do it. Good luck.
