|  Experts Talking (Amateurs) think twice before you tell
Yesterday night, I got a Lecture from someone from my family who I thought I could share my secret (my operation). Besides my father, brothers and sisters (yes big family) wife and my girls I thought well this family member is mature he will understand he will see my need.
Are you kidding... I got the lecture, I got the speech (your mother never would have approved (mom past away 8 years ago).
Anyway after that I realized why I have kept this a secret and not to tell. I felt at first bad because I was not understood but then realized that as a 38 year old man it was my desicion and I am happy with it.
but just wanted to share my experience, about trying to share my happiness with others, they might simply not agree on your desicion very well.
so I wonder has anyone had this experience like I have.

Hang in there,most people do not know what to say, if they cant be supportive. I,fortunately have had a good luck story with the people i have told so.... I guess I dont know the "feeling"of such lectures,but I do feel that if they do not know what they r talking about they prob. shouldnt talk. Kathy

I don't know what it is that people think they have the right to judge anyone and make them feel bad. They are not in your shoes and they don't know how hard you've worked. I think people just like making other people feel bad and those are the people you should avoid. My 'secret' got out unvoluntarily and now i just talk about it like I talk about the weather and so far I've been lucky enough to get nothing but well wishes. Or at least the people with negative comments have the desency to keep their 2 cents to themselves. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience sharing this information, but all that matters is that you know you did the right thing.

Yes, i had my Doctor give me the guilt trip, that was 6 years ago and I went on the gain more and more weight every year. I finally went to him again last year BUT PREPARED, I had done research, attended the seminar and was ready for him to shoot me down again, but to my surprise, he didnt!! I figure he "tests" his patients when they come to him about this issue, and if they are serious, they have already done their homework prior. He referred me for the surgery with flying colors and I had it!! With people who are mis-informed or un-informed we just have to be informed ourselves and they wont get us down because we will know better!

Education seems to help. I had one friend that was taken aback, as they say. She had a hard time accepting the whole thing, but did support me and was a huge cheerleader post op. (She dedicated herself to being my walking buddy for the first 3-4 months even though she didnt need to necessarily). Ya never know what you're gonna get! My least fav response was a lady at work who was sure I was gonna die or be mamed for life, etc. "Please step away from the....... "

This keeps happening to me as well. I am your age and feel that no other person has the right to lecture me on my choices with my own health. After the surgery, when asked how I am loosing so much weight, I'm going to say " under a doctors care" and leave it at that. I now understand why Star Jones did not want to come clean about the surgery, I never understood until now. I always thought "why wouldn't I tell, who cares" well, when all you hear are negative things about your decisions!!

I am so sorry to hear that. I am a lot like you and have only told close family and my 2 best friends. However, I ended up getting the lecture from one of my best friends. I think it is bound to happen- now I am keeping my mouth shut and at 3 weeks post op people are already noticing I am losing weight and they can assume all they want........I don't want any more lectures by sharing!

there are always ppl out there who have something negative to say about everything. i think all of us have been thru this at some time. these ppl seem to overlook the fact that you are taking control of your life and your health. i have had some negative ppl but i just do not care, if they are not there to support me and my decision, then i dont need them. you have done a wonderful thing for you so dont regret your adult decision because someone els dosnt agree, take care!

I told very few people about my surgery - only the ones I love and the ones I know love me back and support me. Even though I was cautious, my mom broke my trust. She did not lecture me but she told other about my surgery, some whom I would never want to know. Anyways, I have lost all respect for my mother (I have a lifetime of being let down by her due to her big mouth). Our relationship will never be the same. I am not angry I am hurt and although I am still very pleasant I will NEVER tell my mother anything I do not want broadcasted ever again.
