Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I know we work hard to get our protein in...but here is my question. Why is it that over 100g of protein is TOO MUCH? What is the problem if we are getting more than that in a day. (not that I am, but I wondered, what does too much protein do?) A guy at hi health told me he gets 200g a day and I about fainted!

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Too much protein leads to too much nitrogen waste. It's also why people who did Atkins (very high protein, at least South Beach had better ideas as to what protein should come from AND has carbs coming from beans and veggies)...people who follow Atkins, their knees and ankles start to hurt.

| Super Moderator | Too much protein will be a strain on the kidneys, and the metabolized products can accumilate and harm your liver as well. Even good things when overdone can harm you. When it comes to nutrion, there's not such thing as the more the better. There is an amount you need daily, but there is also a limit to the amount your body can handle/metabolize daily. No matter how much we all say exercise is good for you, you also know that too much exercise can harm you, too. The same with nutrition--any nutrient. The guy who does 200g is into body building, isn't he? These muscle men take extra protein to build up their muscles, and so long as the need equals the intake, it's fine, but if there's an imbalance there, then it spells trouble. BTW, men can handle more protein than women because they have more muscle than women.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I definitely wanted to add my 2 cents here too. if -IF- you have a very high rate of exercise level with heavy weight training then it's justified to have a higher protein intake. But my intake wasn't upped until I was over 2 yrs out and was running 5 days a week for 55 min per time and hard weight training every 3rd day pretty much my goal for protein intake, using supplements of course was 175 + plus I drank a lot of water per day to keep my kidneys flushed out. My surgeon was a kidney transplant surgeon so he was very big on not overloading either way if your exercise level didn't warrant it. Get your protein from your food unless!! you have a high level of exercise, then you were 'okayed' to use supplements. Don't up your water intake unless your level of exercise warranted it. Plus he's the one who also stated that water was the most important thing over food as he are always on the verge of dehydration..water water water. All my blood work during that particular time was awesome for someone who my PCP doc I had at the time considered "sooo far post op gastric bypass". *whisper evidently she'd not seen very many post wls patients beyond 6 mos out!* It's so much about your activity level, higher amounts are not justified if you don't do anything but walk for 20 min a day,you know what I mean? 60g a day is the min...I've cut back on protein intake a LOT sometimes I wonder if I should have though.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I guess my question is how would I know if I am doing too much or too little? I am just over 1 year post op. I work out 5-6 days a week. I do cardio for 30 minutes a day and on top of that I have also been doing a 3 mile walk every night. Then Ive also been doing weight training at least 2 times a week also. And then sometimes Ive been doign this new thing we have here at the YMCA. Its called Gulick gym. Its kinda like a curves rotation thing. It does cardio and weights together. So I feel that I am very active per say. |

| Super Moderator | The kind of activity we are talking about is not the level of a regular gym work out. What merits an increase in protein is when you are going through very active and rigorous training, like the kind BreeChick went through (remember, she trained for physicals for the Fire Department) which is a pretty tough program. The guy at Kara's gym is most likely a body builder, a muscle man. These people also lift very heavy weights and train religiously. Also, their protein intake is usually programmed into the training e.g. supplement how much with what kind of exercise, and at what timing. These exercises are not for losing weight and keeping fit, but for aggresively building very athletic muscles, and as a result, gaining weight (muscle weight, mind you). So, for the average bypass post ops, who exercise regularly to help the weight loss get along, and lose weight, the 60g minimum is pretty much enough. If you want to up your protein, for women, I'd say 75g at most, actually. With men, the number is a bit higher, since they are more muscular than women.
