Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Cant really say i ever heard COFFEE stretches a pouch...its more carbinated drinks i have heard people say do that. I believe coffee is more a CAFFINE issue for why we shouldnt have to much of it...and caffine will dehydrate some. I am no expert on coffee being i never drank it pre op, I was a diet beverage person for which i have given up well before my surgery. I feel those bubbles would be nasty on my groucy pouchie! i know many seem to do the coffee and add their protein in it.

Height: | I agree with Lisa that it is mostly the carbonation that they tell you to stay away from. I do know that there is a debate about whether or not caffeine is harmful to the weightloss. I know there was an article posted here somewhere that pointed out that it can give energy that is helpful in weightloss, but you would have to counteract that caffeine with extra water since it does dehydrate. My doctor told me that if I absolutely needed the caffeine due to headaches to drink the diet pop flat, but I just use a tension headache formula that has caffeine and aceteminophin in it and no aspirin. I started to get hormonal headaches after my second pregnancy and little bit of caffeine is the only thing that takes the edge off of the pain. HOpe that helps. Janae |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Oh! I don't like coffee. I was hooked on diet cokes and then I drove myself off of them like 3 mo's prior to my surgery. But, the dietician told me to stay away from caffine cause it does this.....sstrreettccheess!! the pouch. So, I ask her if I could have decaf and she said yes. Coffee(yuck) was mention along with tea ,but nothing was mentioned about caffine free diet coke. I can live w/out it and water taste gr8 to me now. but, was asking for a friend of mine who is thinking of having the surgery, and she is a coke fanatic! |

Height: | In that case I think I have heard of people returning back to diet soda after a year post op. I know I have a friend that is addicted to Diet Coke and she lost a lot of weight with surgery, but has put some of it back on since she returned to drinking it. I don't think that her current weight is anything to worry about, but I do tend to think that this might be part of the reason. Janae |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Oh! my. I think I can live w/out it, knowing now this may occur. Was it because maybe the caffine stretched her pouch and she can now eat more then suspected? I don't want this to happen so I will figure a way around thinking about it. Its the taste I miss not the craving. |

| Guru In Training | I think that caffine does tend to dehydrate, I was told that I had to drink 64 oz's of water, pure water.... I can't drink that crystal lite it upsets my stomach so i drink water with lemon and can drink it pretty well. i do like a hot cup of tea, my Earl Grey in the morningbut my DR said.. " no caffine, including tea" but several sips is better for me with hot something than cold something. It does get better... peggy/f

| Super Moderator | Medically and pharmacologically speaking, caffeine is a central nerve stimulator, diuretic and circulatory and repiratory stimulator. Overdose will cause impatience, tremors, nervousness, easy excitability, sleep disturbance, redness of face, diuresis, irregular heart beats and such. It also causes stomach symptoms such as nausea, but there is no mention of any effect that will cause pouches to stretch. As for soda pops. some say the carbonation causes stretching, while others consider it not good for WLS patients because it may cause one to relapse into bad eating habits from there.
