| Chewing at 10 days out from surgery!
I'm 11 days out now and saw my doc for a check up yesterday and he okay'd me to start chewing any food I can tolorate now. I was on clear liquids until yesterday. That was so hard. Now - I know my doc does not agree with all the nut. guidlines & info out there about after surgery diet. He is Asian and what he says does make sense to me. He likes to skip the pruree stage b/c he feels you can over eat easily where the mushy stuff slips thru your pouch vs. foods that you have to chew will stay in our pouch and you will get the full feeling sooner. He recommended fresh veggies and fruit, protien if I like and to just stay away from sugar and high fats/carbs. He didn't say I needed a certain amount of fluids/grams of protein or nada. Just keep up with fluids what I can tolorate and eat until I feel full, what ever food I can tolorate. This is hard to take in after reading what everyone else has done here and all the books/guidlines I have read from the nut. But she warned me that my doc. skips that stage. I do know of others (MsVickie) that have used this doc and had great success so, I know he is a great surgen.
So, yesterday my first meal was cottage cheese and baked salmon. It tasted so great, I chewed very well and ate maybe 2 oz of cottage cheese and 1 oz of salmon. I did have more air to come up that did not feel well, i thought I had already gotten this out but apparently there is more???? Afterwards I felt a little indigestion/pressure. I was wondering if I overate to have this feeling or is this just maybe trapped air? Also when will the air stop coming up everytime I eat? I had oatmeal this morning and took 2 little bites and so much air, I lost my appitite. Now I just snacked on some more cottage cheese and it went down good. I'm not sure what my full feeling is? I don't feel the same as with my old stomach. Also are there other foods that may go down better in the beginning?
Thanks all for any help!

I can tell when I am getting full because I will start to burp or hiccup- maybe that's the same for you? Just be very careful and keep eating the small amounts and chew it all to heck. Your pouch may not be able to tolerate a lot of foods right now (like oatmeal). Also, the full feeling is hard to explain- I didn't really "feel" it until a few months out. With all the swelling and healing it just won't feel the same as it will in a few months when your body is more recovered. The "pressure" you feel is probably your pouch saying enough!!

I'm about 5 weeks out. When I start feeling even a hint of pressure, discomfort, fullness, I put down the fork. In fact, when there's any noticeable change in how my tummy feels, I stop eating. I'm still getting to know my pouch, but I've already learned not to make her mad! I'm allowed to eat 1/2 cup at one sitting, and sometimes I can. Other times, I start to feel something in my stomach and I stop. I haven't dumped yet, but my pouch has hurt due to overfilling and I try to avoid that at all costs! Good luck!

Hi there. Im from the lost world of I dont know where in the world you are right now ! LOL. First of all congrats for making it over and doing well on the other side. I didnt get to come up and see you because I had a late meeting on that Tuesday and it was 9:30 before I got to leave.
Yes Dr Quioco did start me on the chewing stage just like your self. Honey do what you can tolerate. You will find when you hit your full limit trust me. It did take me a while to find it. I just eat until i felt I had enough. Its the same for everyone acutally. Do what he said and really chew it. I dont know if he told you the story of him and his wife going on what he called a diet of chewing or not. Eating like we do but really chewing it. He said his wife looked at him after the third nite and said...honey im so tired of chewing im going to bed. LOL.
You will see the weight start rolling off now. Its a amazing ride for sure. Im still doing the libary right now. My old comp is history said the man who fixes them. I will have to purchase another one but its gonna be a couple of months before I do that. Im not a credit card person and never have been. So I will save my money up to make the purchase.
Anyways im glad your doing good and chew.......Oh yea I seen where you asked about taking the pain meds. I was on them for a good while.

My surgeon's nut described the whole 3 month journey with soft foods,etc...but at week 2, surgeon said I could eat anything that can be blended. 2 days after that, I put away the blender and never looked back! I figured I could chew as well as a blender anyway. Yours is the first time I have seen a surgeon actually say that chewing real food is OK so early out. I think that is fantastic!!
Your pouch is telling you little stories on what it likes/dislikes. I think you are doing great!
Every morning, my pouch burps with whatever I first put in it. I burp with water. I have learned to burp more quietly. lol
This morning, I tried, for the bazillionth time, to eat an egg for breakfast. It LOOKED soo good....and once again, the dog got an egg for breakfast. lol

Thanks Vickie, I know you have had computer issues - sorry. I got a laptop on ebay one time cheap for my neice - but it was slowwww - I can ask to see if she still has it b/c she does not use it??. I bet the library stop gets old. Watch the sales papers for sales, I got mine from dell after seeing them on sale on TV commercial for like $400.
I've noticed that softer foods go down better right now - SF Puddings, cottage cheese and watermelon seem to be best. I am trying mash pot. for first time tonight and have been craving potato salad so I plan on turning the leftovers into that. I've done shrimp cocktail too and it goes well. I notice that when I had salmon, egg/tenderloin that I chewed it filled me up so quick, just a few bites. So I can see why DR. Quioco says that I can hold more soft/puree food than chewable food, therefore in long run take in more cal/carbs. I know in time I will be able to eat more. I love meat before and seem to now too. But right now I just want what sits best.
I assume I am not milk intolorant like some have since I can eat cottage cheese and I had small amount of no sugar added ice cream yest.????
I too have more air coming up everytime I eat/drink. I am hoping this will eventually go away???????
Thanks.

I had the same problem of knowing when I was getting full and still do sometimes. My doctor told be a trick to try a couple of months back that helped me. It sounds crazy and embarrasing, but it worked. He told me to get a 3 minute egg timer, start the timer after you have swallowed and when the sand is all gone to the bottom you can eat your next bite. If you begin to feel satisfied or full then don't take another bite. It worked for me. Hope this helps.
