Default Questions???

At what stage can you have the protein shakes, powders, and ready to drinks? I'm sure this question this question has been asked before but what vitamin and calcium are the best to take. I have my surgery on the 24th of sept and I'm trying to get ready.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

As always- check with your surgeon as they may have guidelines. I was able to drink protein shakes once I got home from the hospital. (so day 3) But I could only drink tiny bits.

Don't buy too much as your tastes will change, and you won't be drinking very much to start.

Good luck!

Hey... I found a website yesterday relating to this question. I started wondering about it when I was reading how some had difficulty in the calorie vs. protein thing. And I found that you can buy these like 2 oz (I think it was like 2 oz) protein "shots"... which aren't shots but think of shots as in alcohol shots (sorry no alcohol) and they had 2 different kinds of flavor and then they also had 2 different kinds with protein grams. One kind had like 45 g and another one had 20 or 25 g. Apparently people would buy these and mix them in their water and drink them throughout the day. They have no sugar. Then they wouldn't have problem with worrying about whether or not they were meeting the requirements. I bookmarked the site... here is the link below.

IDS Sports New-Whey Liquid Protein, 25 g Protein (2.9 oz. vial)

Every surgeon is different. My surgeon had me on protein drinks the day I came home from the hospital (like KB). As for vitamins you'll have to check with your surgeon.

You may even have had protein in the hospital. One of the nutritionsists at the Bariatric Center of Excellence where my surgery took place, gave a talk at our last support group. She stated they put unflavored whey protein in mashed potatoes, borths, etc, in your hospital meals. I had protein drinks the next day after I got home from the hospital. You can't eat anything for the first few days, so you won't have any protein intake, and any foods will be minimal in the next few weeks, unable to supply the 60+ grams of protein you'll need daily. Protein supplements are a must. I'm 27 months post op from RNY, and have lost 157 pounds. I had 2 shakes minumum per day for the first 6 months, then tapered off to one a day for a few months. At 27 months, I still have 3-4 shakes per week to assure myself my protein levels don't get too low. DAVE

Dave,
When you were having 2 protein shakes a day for the first 6 months, what were you eating in addition to them? I ask, because I am almost 8 weeks out and having a really difficult time with food. I thought I should try to wean myself off of the protein shakes, so any suggestions would be appreciated!

Eggs (boiled or scrambled), soft cheeses( colby, string cheese, motzerella), fish, dried edmame, dried peas, veggies, vegetarian refried beans, etc. An extensive list of protein rich foods is at WHFoods: protein and there are probably some foods there you did not know had proteins in them. DAVE

I took Prostat 64 from the day I had the surgery and I even poured the shake down my drain tube for the first 6 weeks when I didnt feel like drinking any of it.
Dont buy too much now, because your tastes will def change after the fact. My surgeons ARNP told me that this surgery is like being forever pregnant with the taste changes. LOLOL He was right too!
