| Is a protein shake a meal?
Hi.
I am 7 weeks post-op and I am trying to get used to my new diet. I don't have much of an appetite for anything, but I am following everyones suggestion -- protein, veg then carbs. I am trying to get in 3 oz of meat/fish for dinner.
My question is.. How do you classify the protein shake? Is it a meal or a snack? I don't mind saying I haven't found a shake that I enjoy and getting in 50 grams of protein a day is IMPOSSIBLE without a shake.
Help !!

A protein shake is considered a meal replacement but I think that it is better to get your protein from food rather than a shake. You should ask your surgeon what he/she wants you to do.

it's both. depending on when you drink it. lol. what i mean is, i think snacks and meals are one and the same. just some drs say only 3 "meals" (i.e. breakfast lunch and dinner) others say "3 meals with one snack" which COULD be a shake. it depends. snack and meal are interchangeable.

I never found a protein shake that did not make me want to puke. I have never drank them. I must get in enough from food b/c I just had my blood work done and my levels were great! I think a lot of people on here do use them as meal replacement...like for breakfast.

I use one most days. I will drink it for breakfast or around my workout time.

Haven't had one since around 4 months out, tried real hard to get in all of my protein in during meals and snacks. If you like tuna, there is alot of protein in that, as well as other meats. I thought it was impossible to get in all of my protein also, keep track of everything I ate and wrote it down along with the protein grams helped out so much. It will come to you, take time.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Congratulations on joining the Losers' Bench.
((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well.
Protein drinks can substitute for a meal when you are relatively early out, but later on, it's best to get things in from real food.
It does take time, but you will eventually get the hang of it.

as others have already stated protein can either be a snack or a meal - at 7 weeks post op i doubt that you are able to get enough protein in your meals. i would keep a food journal to insure that you are getting enough protein. after i get to work i mix up a blue raspberry New Whey liquid protein (42g protein) in a glass with ice and lemonade crystal light and then drink on it all morning. the remainder of my protein i get from foods.

Not all proteins are meals, but they do have meal replacements that are used as exactly that as meal replacements.
