| Gluten Free + Gastric Bypass = ???
So, we found out this week that my husband has an autoimmune disease caused by gluten. The long story short is that he can't even risk being around the stuff, so we have to rid our home of all foods containing gluten.
For those who don't know, gluten isn't just in bread / flour. It's in everything from soy sauce to ice cream to cream of mushroom soup.
The deal is that I am in the process of pursuing RNY; I know that I will meet with a nutritionist, but I'm wondering if anyone else who has had RNY lives in a home that also has to be 100% gluten free, and how this has affected your post-op diet.
Any insight would be so incredibly helpful! Thank you!

No, sorry, I don't know much about it. My girlfriends daughter is the same, and in introducing all gluten free foods into the house she and her husband have droped quite a bit of weight. I do know that restaurants have special menus (ask) that list all their gluten free dishes. And I see a ton of gluten free products at all the health food stores. The several types of crackers that I have tried are not wonderful, but not cardboard either. So I image you have to get some understanding of what and where it is and how to work around it. It will be tough at first, I'm sure. But honestly,...after you figure it all out and it becomes second nature, you both will most likely become so much more healthy! I do notice that people who have no choice but to live gluten free actually lose weight and feel so much better! I have also read that alot of times people who just don't feel great or have trouble with digestion should look into a gluten free diet - but that sometimes it's on such a small scale it goes by unchecked. Good luck to you and your hubby!

I haven't had surgery but my mom has ciliac disease which I am assuming is what your husband has. As you know it is a very serious disease in which the body can not process any gluten. My mom can't eat rice, only brown rice, no bread, cake, so on and so forth. They say that people who do not have ciliac and eat gluten free foods are not affected by it. The food is extremely expensive but there are alot more options available than in the past. I can't really tell the difference too much in the taste of gluten free and non gluten free food except bread. The bread is DISGUSTING!!!When we go out to eat, my mom has to be careful. She has to order burgers without buns and so on. There are no restaurants that I know of that have gluten free menus. I hope that helps.

A proper post WLS diet is very nutrient dense diet with a minimum of carbs and the crap that make us unhealthy to begin with. It is what we would be eating if we maintained a proper weight naturally.
Whenever I eat stuff with high carbs or fat or additives like gluten, I feel every where from "like crap" to "OMG I gotta lie down for an hour". (which is what I know to be dumping)
I would think clearing your pantry of gluten to be nothing but a win-win for your family, WLS or not.
My 2 cents...your mileage may vary.

| Ideally, you'd be eating lean meats, fresh fruit and vegies, and working your way to some carbs which could certainly be gluten free ~ I don't see a reason why you cant make it work.

I agree with Clancy- lean meats, nuts, beans, legumes, fruits and veggies are all gluten free and what you should be eating the most of after surgery. It will make it a whole lot easier not having that other stuff at home!

Demarie- thanks for the tip. That would be awesome for her to go out to a restaurant and not have to alter it.
