I have been reading alot of responses to diets and how fast people are getting to certain stages. I was told by my surgeon that after 4 weeks I would be able to eat anything I want. I've noticed alot of you guys saying that 4 weeks is just too soon. So my question is, is it always best to follow those directions even if they seem a bit too quick? Has anyone stretched the rules out? Would the surgeon or nutritionist agree to change the rules if I ask them? Four weeks to whole foods does sound fast, especially after what you guys have said and I trust you cause you've had it, even though my surgeon is educated he hasn't experienced it ya know? I guess this is just more jitters...I'm rambeling now

| ALWAYS follow YOUR surgeon's rules. This is the GOLDEN rule.
It is YOUR surgeon who operated on you, and knows what s/he did to you. NOT someone else's surgeon. So, for your surgeon to insure optimal success, you MUST follow your surgeon's rules. DO NOT deviate, DO NOT try some one else's rules.
I cannot stress enough how important this is.

IMHO, I think the worst thing a WLS surgeon can tell someone is that they can eat anything they want 4 weeks out....my surgeon told one of his patients this at 90 days... she went out and had chicken fried steak.....I agree each surgeon's plan is unique, but some people take things seriously....and early out, it's important to set the habits in place you will follow the rest of your life.....why set someone up to fail?

Thats what I mean...its like I LOVE food, and knowing that in 4 weeks I can eat whatever I want is tempting but I KNOW BETTER. I can't say how I am going to feel or react, but 4 weeks still sounds scary, I feel like I need more than that. I guess I will find out!

Define " want".
If you " want" to spend a bit more time working back up to solids and unlimited foods, do it. If you " want" to reintroduce foods slowly to test pouchy's reaction to it, do it. If you " want" to go downtown and get a big butter pretzel, redefine "want"!
If your only guidance is that you can eat whatever you " want", then your course of action will probably be different than it would be if you decided you " want" to be cautious based on what you've read of others' experiences here.
If you " want" to eat healthy, avoid Baskin-Robbins, McDonalds, and most other fast food places (whatever their equivalent may be in Norway.)
Follow your surgeon's instructions. He has said that you " would be able to" eat, not that you " should" or " must" eat. If you " want" this to succeed, you must first define your food " wants" in that light.
I eat well, and I eat whatever I want to, but I do not eat the way I used to, because I no longer want to do that to my body. Thirty years was enough! I have redefined "want", and I included "wisdom" in the definition as guidance.
The key to long-term success is to choose healthy food in appropriate amounts. This may require you to " want" different foods than you " wanted" when you were gaining weight.

Okay what I meant by everything is that I *WANT* to take more than 4 weeks to get through the stages. I don't want to feel like I have to eat that way just cause the paper says that if I am not ready. And by eat *that way* I mean in line with the rules..not McDonalds or something (which I don't eat anyway, its gross :P=

Now, there are a number of people whose surgeons did put them back to solids, so that is plausible. Whether you can do most of the solids is another question. Your pouch may or may not be able to accept such foods as red meat, in which case, you will have to wait until your pouch is more agreeable. In your case, I think that you can interpret that as, "you may eat whatever your pouch accepts" not, you must still stick to pureeds and such.
Choose wisely and move wisely in this case. |

yeah i think the interpretation is off. at 4 weeks, if i was told i could eat what i wanted iw ouldnt have eaten at all. to be honest, i think it sucks that your surgeon dosesnt provide more structure for you at that stage....but hey, he is YOUR surgeon...

At the end of the day, when that time comes only you will know or feel if you "want" or need to take the next step. You may not even have an appetite. Baby steps.
