| Rice
Is there going to be a point in which a little bit white rice will be okay to eat without making me sick? I have not has any rice since waaayyyyy before surgery (except for a teeny bit of sushi rice) and quite frankly, I'm scared to death to have any because I understand that it can make us very sick. But does there come a time in which we can have little bit and still be safe? I am speaking specifically of white rice and not the long-grain kind.
I love to go to Chiptole and get a bean bowl, but I love their rice and would enjoy just a little in my bowl. Is that ever going to happen again or should I just resign myself to the fact that irice is now out of the question forver?

It depends on the person. CraigT can do a very small bowl of rice. The question is whether you dump on it, and whether the rice will swell up in your pouch to block it.

So then I guess I just have to try and little and see how it goes for me...
I'm not a big "dumper" but what I don't want is to be bloated and sick for hours. It doesn't sound worth it to me....

My OWN opinion here........... back away from the rice for now! It took me atleast a entire year before attempting it. When I did it might have been a teaspoon and I knew I eat it and yes felt bad. Really bad.
Little story. My sister n laws mom had this done a 2 years before myself. She eat a bit one evening. She ended up in the ER thinking she most defentialy it was a heart attack. It was the rice. It was white.
Upon trying it I used the white and oh my. It did swell up on me. Now to go back to my sis n laws mom. I cant prove this nor can she........you would think she would have not eaten this again for a very long time........but no. She kept attempting it it would swell up and she well lived though it. Remember the rice diet years ago?
She will tell you right now and I kinda belive it .....who knows........ that she stretched the pouch out with it because she eat it so much. She is 40 pounds away from her orginal start weight.
Who knows.......but she wouldnt let it go. I do a tad now of long grain and wild rice when I do eat a bit. The hubby loves to cook rice as a side dish or add to a main meal but has learned not to mix it up and keep it to the side for me or others who may be eating with us incase they dont like it. Still to this day honey I wont do more than a tablespoon with a meal because well it fills me up. Its soft so you dont chew it and.... it dont stay with me as long. Chewing somthing you have to chew makes a happy pouch because it stays longer. Hence the sucess of continuing to lose. My surgeon told me this and I have always listended to what he told me about that. He only did this surgery for 20 years and stoped at one time because the way they were doing it wasnt helping to have a lasting effect. aka stomach stapling and blowing out the staple to let food into the old tummy to. Thank goodness they disconnet the old tummy now. He wouldnt do the band either stating it was the same thing as the old stomach stapling. His words and telling me this surely have helped me. And yes im still loosing a bit a month mabye a pound mabye none but still on the down hill with it. He is a smart man. I just wish he didnt retire.
So in the end its up to you and I have told you what I know about it. Rice is good yes and many cultures eat it. Its delicious but can cause major problems with WLS patients like ourselfs. Please try to stay away for a year

I was about a year and a half out before I tried rice and like Msvicki did, tried only about a Tablespoon to see if it settles in my pouch. The only kind of rice I eat is the brown and white rice mixed but only the instant rice. I add enough water to my dish when baking or cooking to make sure it is completly soft and expanded before I eat it. I still only do anout a T. or two. I have only eaten rice about 3 times so far and it agrees with me and have no trouble. But it is a little high in carbs so I try to stay away from it.

I am one of those "lucky" or maybe I am "unlucky" because I don't dump at all. I can eat anything but I don't stray very often at all from what I should eat. I can eat rice and I have had a few bites but I choose not to eat what I call the bad carbs. I am the same way with potatoes. I guess it will have to be trail and error when you are far enough along to give it a try. It just might not be worth it. You are doing great. Keep up the good work. It is so worth it...

I haven't tried just straight white rice by itself yet, and may not ever again. I use it in soups and other dishes, but not alone. Still, when I'm at LeeAnn Chin for a rare Chinese lunch, I'll get their kid's meal and take the fried rice with it. I'll end up eating maybe a quarter of it.
The risk of swelling and the nature of the refined carbs in white rice work together to discourage me from experimenting. I don't want it bad enough to risk what it could do.
When I go to Chipotle, I get the burrito bowl with both kinds of beans instead of the rice. More protein, less carbs, and all that free methane!!

Dixie I eat potatoes and dont dump from them. They have always agree with me. Potatoes are good for you. They are natural foods as I call them. Yes they have carbs but.... We need 90 a day to keep from the fog. If it wasnt for them early out I would have starved litteraly. I do limit them because I could eat mashed potaoes every day or a baked one.
Honestly any thing that is put on this earth natually is what I personally think was placed here for consumption. Its the things they chemically make or subsitute is the problem. I will always belive that unless im shown to my face other wise. LOL
Yea im weird but do belive that.

I eat sushi rice that I cook in a rice cooker with rice wine vinegar mixed in with it. I can tolerate it quite well, but when I tried brown rice..omg..swelled up in my gut.
Long grain rice is one I really can't tolerate. But I also did NOT do rice until just last year at 6? yrs out. The first couple times it blocked up in my stenosis..But after that I tried smaller amounts with a lot of success.
My daughter works in a sushi restaurant so we have that quite often with no problems.
I eat more complex carbs than I ever used to before along with the solid protein.

I guess the answer would depend on your opinion of white flour as a "natural" food!
