Default Complex Carbohydrates?

Are you eating them?

They are in my diet (according to our book and the nutritionist) but most people I have seen that are successful do NOT eat breads and such.

I have had maybe 1/4 piece of whole grain bread and 2 crackers at one sitting. But I am worried that this will impede my loss. At the same time, I am following the guidelines they gave me to a T.

Advice?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

You will find many different food plans. It seems each doctor has a different plan. I also have complex carbs in my plan. I do eat a few but try to limit them. Some people don't eat any at all. I was told by my nut. that we need some to keep a balanced diet. My advice to you would be to follow what your plan says. A lot of it will be trial and error to see what your pouch will tolerate. You will learn fast if it does not like something. Best of luck to you.

Just keep following your plan. It seems as though our plans are so varied that they contradict each other. Do what works for you. The main things are:

Protein first ALWAYS (my plan sets a 60g/day minimum)
Veggies/fruits next
Carbs if room allows
Stay hydrated--at least 60 oz water/fluids per day
Exercise daily and consistently
Vitamins/minerals daily
Introduce new foods slowly
Chew, chew, chew...

I'm only 7 weeks out, so I have just started adding back some whole grain carbs (it is in my plan). You will find many different views on here, but for now I feel like whole grains are an important part of a healthy diet and are okay in moderation. Now if I see at some point that it hinders my weight loss you will hear a different opinion...but I feel like I could've done Atkins without having to go through surgery...so I am not following a no carb plan. I DO follow the rules...Protien first, then veggies/fruit, then carb if there's room. No drinking with meals etc... I am choosing healthy options, I know I won't ever be eating Pizza Hut...but I have found a healthy alternative that is very good. I use 100% whole grain Flat Out flatbread (very thin and has 9 grams protein per slice). I top that with pizza sauce, low fat mozzerella cheese, lots of veggies and sometimes even a few slices of pepperoni, and it bakes up nice and crisp in about 10 min. I can only eat half of it. I have also eaten a slice of toasted whole wheat thin bread (sara leigh light) and topped it with some kind of healthy protein. For now I see no problems...I do limit these types of things, but if I start to see a stall in my weight loss I will definately reassess my situation.

As long as you follow what your plan suggests you should be fine, but I see this time as learning how to live the rest of our lives, so it will be trial and error for a while.

Bread and crackers are not usually complex carbs. The use of refined flours breaks down the complexity and renders the carbs of the grain much more digestible, which means that the sugars and starches are absorbed too well for our purposes. Complex carbs are found in unrefined whole-grain products, some fruits and many veggies.

Countrygirl, you will see stalls no matter what you eat. You could avoid all carbs and still stall. We used to on Atkins, and it happens here too. But the eating of unnecessary carbs makes you stall sooner and longer than would otherwise be the case. Your flatbread sounds interesting. Could you post more info on it, please? That might even be better than Wasa bread!

The crackers I eat ARE whole grain, so are the breads. That is what my diet says I should be eating.

Follow the plan you've been given. If your surgeon and nut weren't comfortable for you with the choices, it wouldn't be there in the first place.

I was big on carbs mostly in the winter before my surgery. Now I can have 2 small bites of a roll if I go out, and dislike the taste of pasta. I haven't bothered with most carbs, except my sweet potatoes and occassional oatmeal. I think it's a blessing in disguise as before it was hard to control my carb intake. Now I crave fresh vegies and fruit. I was craving lettuce today of all things, lettuce!!!!!

CT...here is a link to the Flatbread I was talking about. I get it at Walmart near the bakery section.
