| Interesting article on binge eating after WLS. Found this via Facebook. I liked it very much (the article...not the subject matter) and thought some of you would enjoy it too.

It's neither for nor against. It just reports on some research findings that relate to us and warns us of some of the inherent challenges we face. Odds are good that many of us have addictive personalities. Our food addiction may indeed have been a factor in shaping our life pre, and the success we have in dealing with it will be a factor in shaping our life post.
We often say that 90% of this journey is mental, and the surgical modification is only a tool to be used with skill. This article confirms that if our minds aren't in the game, we may lose it (as in regain what was once lost.)
That's not pro or con. That's our reality. If you analyze the posts by or about those who fail, you can see exactly the same thing. We already knew all of this. This just validates it.

Thanks for posting this. I've been going through this issue for a while now. I'm having trouble controlling myself, or rather I am controlling myself in a very dangerous way. I am slowly relapsing into old habits, not over eating but eating pretty much whatever shit I can shove in to my face. I realize that I am doing some serious 'bored' and 'because it's there' eating. I also notice that I am guilt eating BECAUSE I just did that. NOT GOOD! I need some serious support, but unfortunately the nutritionists and what not at my hospital speak terrible english and I speak even worse norwegian so we end up sitting there staring at each other. I'm going to read through all this information and see if I can help myself. Thanks so much for posting this.

Very interesting. I think one thing that could be expaned on is the role of the pre-op psych clearance. From what I've seen the psych clearance is pretty much a joke. I haven't heard of many people getting a really thorough psychological exam. I didn't have to get one at all! Due to my profession, I keep in touch with a therapist regularly to make sure I am keeping my emotions cared for so they won't impact my patients negatively. I told my surgeon's office that I have had a therapist for years and they allowed me to get a letter of clearance from my own therapist. I think it was legitimate in my case, but the opportunity for abuse of the situation is definately there.

I agree so much with the pre op counseling, and I also think everyone will benefit from post op counseling, too.
I can understand many pre ops feeling offended or uncomfortable at the least about pre op psych eval, but it's just one more tool to help with the post op adjustments and make the journey less traumatic. I think the bariatric community would do well to point out why it's necessary, and incorporate a better psych program into their program to help with the many emotional issues that surface post op.

reading the article made me take a look at myself and my recent activities.
It has obviously been difficult when a "coping mechinism" is taken away. In my case it was more than one... Eating and drinking alcohol.
I have noticed that when I have been stressed I have been snacking, which is something that I rarely did post.
I will obviously pay more attention to this behavior. I have worked so hard to get where I am, it is not an option to go backwards!
