| How many carbs?
I'm 5 weeks out and am doing okay. I was wondering what my carb intake should be. The info my NUT gave me says that about 10% of my diet should be carbs. Anyone have a good reference on what this would be in grams? My diabetes is fading away (woohoo!) so I don't eat a lot of carbs anyway but everything is so different post surgery.

I'm not an expert on this at all, but you can go to fitday.com and put in your food and it gives you a cool chart that breaks down what percent of your daily intake is carbs, protein, fat, etc. There are other sites too, but I use fitday.com. It's free and very easy....Also a good way to make sure you are getting in enough protein.

I asked my NUT this very question today. I am 3 months out and she said no more than 90 grams a day but they should be complex carbs (whole wheat ect) No white carbs as she calls them!
Hope this helps.

It all depends on the surgeon's plan. I'm 2 years out, and mine still doesn't want me to have more than 5 carbs per meal. Yikes!! I just saw him last week and he's NOT pleased that I didn't reach my goal. But yanno... you do the best you can. I just try to keep things as low carb as possible.

At your 5 weeks out, your priority is still protein, so you won't be able to get in that much carbs, at least at the amount that would affect your weight loss.
10% carbs, depends on how your nut actually meant you to calculate. 10% of total intake in volume, and 10% of total calories are two different amounts. You need to be clear if she means 10% of the volume--in other words, say, if you can eat one cup per sitting, then 10% of that should be carbs, or, if your total daily intake is at around 600-800 kcals, then, 10% of that is 60-80 kcals, which when converted into grams will be 15-20g carbs, as 1g carb = 4kcals.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Protein is definitely my priority right now. My "NUT Bible" has a section for Dietary Guidelines, that's where it mentioned my diet being 70-75% Protein, 10-20% Carbs, and 5-15% Fat. I think the percentages are total volume because this section doesn't mention caloric intake.
My suggested diet for weeks 5 and 6 include boiled potatoes, noodles, unsalted crackers, and soft cooked noodles. For example, a suggested dinner is 1-2 oz. Diced Ham, 1/4 cup soft cooked noodles, and 1/4 cup carrots. I'm not sure if these are my old diabetic habits sticking with me or what, but that seems like a lot of carbs to me. I haven't had any of them, because I don't think they're wise choices right now. This is a huge learning process for me, but I'm loving it!

That does seem like a lot of carbs for so early out. Especially them being the simple carbs(white bread, noodles, crackers ect) I don't do any of those. I try to only take in carbs from fruits, veggies and whole grains if there is room after my protiens. I would follow wha your NUT says though.
