| Sooo frustrated! What to do?
Hi all - I'm 3 weeks post-op and feel like I can win for losing! No matter what I eat, I end up feeling nauseated. I tried soups, cottage cheese, scrambled egg beaters, and just a plain old protein shake. I tried it with just water, with milk, with frozen strawberries, with banana, with peanut butter - nothing settles in my angry pouch. I told my surgeon's office and they said not to drink any more protein - just focus on food. Well, I can't eat anything that doesn't make me sick to my stomach!
Not only does nothing settle, I had nothing but diarrhea the first 2 weeks post-op. My surgeon's office wanted me tested for C-Diff so I went and picked up the kit and then didn't have diarrhea since. (of course) but then last night it came back again. Am I going to fight this the rest of my life? Is this the new ME? This is another one of those moments when I ask myself why I did this to myself. I literally just want to sit and cry....

I feel your pain! I have been dealing with the same symptoms since I had my bypass done 6 weeks ago, everything makes me sick to my stomach. I told my doctors office about it and they prescribed me Zofran, for the nausea and also took me off protein shakes. They told me to try carnation instant breakfast for extra protein but I thought that even the sugar free had too many carbs. I now drink Atkins shakes and they do seem to do well with my tummy. They also told me that some women, especially ones who suffered from extreme nausea during pregnancy, which I did, can have the same problems after the surgery and it usually lasts about 6 months. This is due to the quick weight loss messing with our hormones. I hope this has helped, a bit at least knowing you are not alone. I too sometimes regret my decision to have had this done but then think in the long run all of this discomfort will be so worth it when I have my HEALTHY new body. Feel free to PM me if you ever are having a real bad day and want to vent.

I had diarrhea really bad for a while after surgery. It is just going to take time. Your body is still healing. Don't get discouraged. Keep trying different kinds of protein. What you can't eat today maybe tomorrow you can. Cottage cheese and re fried beans saved me during this time. That is when I was cleared for them. I was on liquids for several weeks before I could try any soft foods. Good luck.. It will work for you although you might not think so right now. This is common early out.

Thanks Nikki - you may regret telling me to PM you!! LOL!!!! I sat in church this morning soooo sick to my stomach and wondering if I should excuse myself to go to the bathroom, but I sat there and "sucked-it-up". I had no children but if this is what you went through when you were pregnant, I feel bad for you! Is there anything you can eat that doesn't make you sick?
Thanks for understanding where I'm at right now.

I could eat yogurt right away without being sick and runny oatmeal. This is pretty normal and it will get better!

you sound like me early out. I couldnt eat anything. I looked back at my notes I kept. I had a section for foods that made me sick. Pretty much everything made me ill. Atkins shakes, isopure, mixed veggies, yogurt.... I can eat all of that now. I lived on cottage cheese and ricotta cheese with a little marinara on top. I had to take TINY TINY bites. Everything shocked my system. you do need to touch base with your Dr for the other problem. You dont want to get dehydrated

I was on clear liquids for nearly 2 weeks then allowed cottage cheese, eggs, refried beans and protein shakes. I found that I could tolerate basic flavors in the protein drinks (chocolate, vanilla and strawberry mixed with milk) but it took longer for the fruit flavor ones to settle (I use Nectar protein). I really lived on cottage cheese and protein drinks for 10 days until I was allowed to add in yogurt. Not sure why my surgeon has us wait for yogurt until almost a month out but he does.
I feel for you, it does get better. Your water is still the most important thing right now, you don't want to end up in the hospital on IV's to get re-hydrated.

Are you doing any better today? If not, call your nut and/or surgeon and see if you can get any suggestions.

Well, I am feeling A LITTLE bit better. I stopped the protein shakes (as per my surgeon) and am focusing on getting water in. I found that I can handle yogurt and creamy soups, but no more then about 2 1/2 oz. of food total per meal. My NUT says over and over that I just need to sip on protein shakes while I am awake and has no regard that they make me sick or that my surgeon says NO more shakes at this time! I think I was eating stuff that I shouldn't have been because I could (or I thought I could) and I just hope I didn't hurt my pouch so early out. I've lost 44 lbs in the first month but it still feels like I made a horrible mistake so far.
