| Memorial Day specials!!
Typically in the US, the Memorial Day weekend is the official start of the outdoor grilling season. Countless hamburgers and hot dogs are sacrificed to the god of charcoal and his brother, the god of propane. Stores often enable this behavior with special prices on proteins.
Today, for instance, I found chicken thighs for $1.39/lb. I thought that was pretty good and put a few in my cart, but then I saw that leg quarters (with back section attached) were $0.49/lb!! Back went the thighs and a bunch of leg quarters hopped into my cart!
Leg quarters need a bit of butchering to break them down into their three components. I once trained at a poultry disassembly plant in Alabama (50,000 chickens every shift went in clucking and came out a couple hours later as chicken fingers and McNuggets!!) Give me a sharp knife and a big cutting board and I'm your man!!
So now I have two large vacuum-sealed bags of legs (13 in one, 14 in the other) and a similar size bag of back sections, all stored safely in the freezer awaiting the call to service. And a crockpot with 27 thighs layered in it, with a couple of sliced Vidalia onions, a bottle of BBQ sauce and a generous amount of minced garlic in between.
I'm not planning to do a lot of cooking this weekend!!
On Monday there's a get-together at the church, bring your own meat, they provide the rest. I have two Iowa pork chops marinating in a bag of Korean BBQ sauce. Ought to be pretty good by then! We'll grill them and put them on a stick, just like at the State Fair!
Anyone else get any good deals on stuff or have plans for some good eating??

| Watermelon!
I bought a big ole seedless watermelon for only a $1.99! Not bad..not bad at all. I also got blueberries and strawberries on sale, so I am going to make a fancy bowl out of that watermelon, and fill it with mixed fruit (melon balls, 3 kinds, strawberries, blueberries, grapes, mandarin oranges, and pinepple) all tossed with nothing but a smidge of lemon juice. I also got some good deals on fresh vegetables, so I have them cut up in bite size pieces and they are marinating. I also have chunks of chicken, beef, and some jumbo shrimp in marinade. My kids are coming home tomorrow and we are having shish-ke-bobs. Hopefully it doesn't rain. On the way to Perfesser's you can swing by my place and have some of everything I have to offer, not to mention fresh, right-from-the-cheese-factory-Wisconsin cheese curds! They squeak when you you bite them, and they have no carbs! All the while listening to country music, of course. Everyone have a safe holiday!

| Bean Salad +++
Here's a picture of the bean salad I made for the picnic tomorrow. It's based on the Bean Salad recipe I posted sometime back. As you can see, I got a bit creative with the ingredients, but it still tastes perfectly acceptable!!
There's yellow and white hominy, corn niblets, red onion, yellow and orange bell peppers, green beans (and a bunch of others, too!) I put it together this morning before church so it'd have plenty of time for the different flavors to get friendly.
Barbara, we've got plates if you're gonna just grab it and run off to Country Strong's place without settin' and chawin' with us! But you're welcome to stick around awhile and get to know us! I think you'd like Peanut!!
